Living Together Before You're Married

Original post by MonkeyLuv

This is a 2 part question...

How many of you live together before you are married?

How many of you had issues with your parents regarding it?

Re: Living Together Before You're Married

We have been living together for over a year and we got engaged 7 months ago. At first my father was not too thrilled about it, but it just made more sense. We didnt see each other that much;now that has gotten so much better. My parents are fine with it now. I really think it is a good idea to live with someone before you get married. You really get to see their true colors.

We may buy a house in Jersey (most likely) before we get married. I will probably move there under the condition that he does not move in until we are married.

My parents are very strict and his mom would be upset.

He wants to move in right away and since my parents will be exactly 52 miles apart, I'm sure he'll end up spending a lot of time there.

I do want to wait till it's official. So I'll be pushing him out at night. The other thing is he's a cop and works ridiculous schedules so it wouldn't be like most couples anyways.

Jensun, it's different for everyone. One of my best friends didn't live with her husband before they were married, and yes, there was an adjustment period, but they just celebrated their frst anniversary and are very, very happy.

FH and I just want to do things a little ou of order. As much as I don't wan to disrespect my parents, I also need to do what makes me happy!

Also, I'm hoping to use these 2 years before we're married to explain to him that THE DIRTY SOCKS LIVE IN THE HAMPER!

LOL...only two years? Most men take longer than that to learn!!!!!!

P.S. FH will be moving in together around June and if finances permitted we would have moved in together last year. Parents are fine but then again we're older (if you call 36 and 34 older!)

we have been living together for 10 months or so, engaged since sept, neither side of parents have a problem with it. FH and I both agreed that living together was the best way to start our life together, it's really a preference though, everyone is different

We do not live together, partly because my parents would kill me!

My parents pretty much raised me and my sisters the same way. They feel very strongly about being married before living together. They freaked when I went on vacation with FI 2 years ago.

I on the other hand see absolutely nothing wrong with it. I only didn't do it out of respect for my parents. FI also felt like he needed to respect my parents decisions and actually agreed with them.

Two and a half years ago, when I was 21 years old, I announced to my parents (in the same month), first that I was getting engaged, second that I was moving in with FH. My parents are very non-conservative, so although they were surprised, it was not an issue. My parents are very proud of the life FH and I have made together.

We didnt live together before we were married for 2 reasons. First our parents would not have been happy and second it was great to live home as long as we could 'rent free'! We were able to save $$ and pay for most parts of our wedding on our own.

we've been living together for almost 3 years now and my parents were the ones who suggested it. They were getting work done on our house and had to knock down 2 of my bedroom walls to add on an extension to the house (for an apartment for my grandma) and asked if I could move in with my boyfriend until the work was done. Well, the work was finished a year later and I never moved back in. It would have been to hard to move back and leave him. So therefore my parents were obviously delighted to be rid of me, haha.

we have live together almost 2 yrs, I say its a good thing because you get all the bs out of the way of licing together before your married and do not have that stress to ad to it when you are newly married. My parents werent happy but they dealt with it, they don't come over to much. I think it may take something away but all you learn from from it, its so worth it i had a hard time adjusting so i think it was the best idea. looking back it may have been better if we stayed at home and saved, but we didnt and we manage. :)

We have been living together for a year and two months, and have been engaged for six- dating for two. We initially moved in together so he could help me pay my rent! Plus, I live out of state, so I am not near family to board with. If I could have afforded to live on my own, I would have liked to before getting married. You learn a lot about yourself when you are living alone, and I think that is important before getting married. But, moving in together worked out very well for us.. I guess we already have all the 'whose stuff goes where, who takes out the garbage, cooks, laundry, etc' stuff all figured out already :) But, we are also having a house built, which will be ready around the wedding, so that will be a way of starting our life together off fresh!! I am soo excited!!!

My FH and I have been together for 7 1/2 years now.. And we have been living together for over 2 years now. My parents (especially my mom) are very strict Catholics, and my father is a very stubborn Sicilian, so when I told them I was moving in with Dave, it was very interesting...
They really couldn't say to much, I was 25 at the time, and had been working for the NYPD for almost two years at that time. I told them if I could run around with a bullet proof vest and a gun every day after criminals, I should be able to move in with my boyfriend... WELL... They still weren't too happy, but they know I am a responsible adult, and they respected my decision. Needless to say, the first time they came to visit , it was very wierd, but after 2years now, it has gotten a lot better...

As for living together before marraige, I'm glad we have, and I wouldn 't change anything!!!

my dh and i lived together almost as long as we have been together. i think it helped us alot being able to relate to each others faults lol. he is a neat freak and im an oscar madison lol so if knew what he was getting into before we married. my father passed away and he and my dh never met but im sure they would have loved each other but regardless i think my dad would still have had a problem with me living with a man i wasnt married to. my mom was fine with and thinks its a great idea. my father was from poland and his thoughts were more tradtional them moms

me and my Fh have being living together for about 2 years. I love it it. I love coming home from work and he is here to greet me he gets of earlier then i do. I think it is good to live together before you are married so you know how he is living. People ask doesn't he get annoying he does not get annoy at all to me. We have days were we both hangout with our friends so we have time away from each other and when we are away from each other we miss each othe dearly. So i think it is great living with then before you are married.

Re: Living Together Before You're Married

We lived together before we were even engaged and it definitely sped up the engagement process because you really get to know someone and feel much more comfortable knowing you could be married.

Living at home to save money would have been an option if we were younger maybe, but we were in our 30's and already had separate apartments, so it made no sense to pay two rents.

My parents are old fashioned and did not believe in living together. I was scared to death to tell them. But luckily they liked DH so that made it easier and also, like I said I was 31 years old so they had be keep their mouth shut to some extent.

I moved out of my parent's house in March and my FH was just coming on his days off and staying....but as time went on, he moved his stuff in little by little and now he lives here. No BS from the parents. We are all happy. I think living together is great and you really get a chance to know if things will work. Just because you get along does not necessarily mean you will be ok living together. this will make the transition to being Mr. and Mrs. nice and smooth. I do however know a few people who feel like its bad to live with your fiancee before you are married. I guess everyone is different.

Re: Living Together Before You're Married

We have lived with each other for 1 year before we got engaged and we were engaged for almost 2 and 1/2 yrs. My family was ok with it, his wasn't but didn't totally flip. As long as we weren't living under their roofs together or sleeping with one another under their roofs then they were ok.
