I know you are probably already getting ready and wont read this until afterwards but I wanted to chime in here.

I'm on the fence about this whole thing. I agree 100% that if you specifically said that his proposing tonight would upset you, then he is VERY wrong for doing so anyway. I'm trying to understand why he would be so hell bent on doing something on the very day that would steal your thunder.

However, as angry as you may be, try and take a step back and breathe. No matter WHAT, this is still YOUR engagement party and everybody knows that. IMO, he is going to be making a fool of himself, b/c most people are going to be thinking exactly what all of us are thinking....'What an a-hole'.

Just a little side story for you, I'm not sure if it will help but I got engaged December of 06. My cousin had been dating one of my best friends for a little over 2 years and I knew that they had discussed marriage. (Friend, if your reading this, yes, I'm talking about you). Well, we decided to hold off til june to have our e-party since the weather would be nicer and we wanted to wait til FH's brother's wedding was over (so as not to steal their thunder). A few weeks before our e-party my cousing called and told me that he had purchased a ring for my friend and that he was planning on proposing, but that out of respect for me and FH he was going to wait til after our party. I was the one who actually suggested he propose at our party b/c where it was being held was where they had first met and I thought it would be SO romantic. He did not feel comfortable (which I can understand) , but I told him to PLEASE NOT wait til after my e-party. If anyone knows what it's like to wait, it was me (dated FH for over 10 years before an e-ring), I really figured that once he got that ring in his hand, it would be very hard to keep himself contained and not give it to her, and I certainly did not want to be the reason behind that. Just knowing what it felt like, I was more than happy to share my joy with them.

I know this was long, and I know that it's probably different from your situation, but I think you should try and be the bigger person here. Smile and enjoy your big day. Nothing can take that away from you and you shouldnt let it. I truly believe that selfish people get their's somewhere along the line. And the one's who were willing to step back and let it be, are the one's who will be left smiling.

That *****. It sounds like he might have had good intentions at first, but this whole thing spiraled out of control and he's really immature. I love that you seated him at the kids table.

Try not to let it bother you -- this is YOUR night and if anything, he's just taking away from their special 'we're engaged' night by doing it right before a party to celebrate someone else's engagement. They just get lost in the shuffle.

dh proposed the afternoon of my cousin's sweet 16. he didn't want to talk the night away from her...we were going to tell her at the end of the night. but my big mouth cousin had to tell the guest of honor. she was happy for us. we told her that we didn't want to ruin her night, she understood.

It is very rude of him to do that.. it's almost as bad when one of the groom's friends did a sporadic popping of the question to his GF at their wedding! Everyone was shocked.

Not sure but maybe someone other than you - maybe a few family members - can tell him it's not a good idea and to do it in private.
