No Kids Invited = DRAMA

Original post by JessesGirl

Ok, so just wondering if anyone else has a 'No Kids' policy for their wedding. Since FH's friends and family have more than 20 children, and at least 10 under the age of 3, we decided to have a no kids allowed policy, even for family. We love our cousins, etc. but dont want our dance floor turning into a playpen or having to worry about kids falling down or spilling stuff on people.

My mom's cousin, who I call my aunt called my mom yesterday FUMING at her that my 9 yr old and 12 yr old cousins ( her children) aren't invited. She said that her friends think its absolutely awful that her children can't come and that they are 'going to be crushed'! She won't even bring the little girl to my shower because it will get her too excited for a wedding she cant go too and she ever made the point that 15 years ago, 'she accomodated for kids at her wedding'. Well this is NOT HER WEDDING, it's mine and im pissed that she started world war 3 with my mother over something that was my decision. The fight of course got personal and now she might not even come to the wedding. I called her last night to explain and she didn't pick up and wont call me back.

Is anyone else going through this? I don't think it's rude to not invite kids when the reception starts at 8:30Pm and goes until 1am.

ps. This same cousin's mother is not invited to my wedding either b/c she doesnt get along with my grandparents but that is a totally seperate issue. Because of it though, she is taking the kids thing personally! ERRRRRR

pps. Forgot to add that Im not even having a ringbearer or flowergirl. No kids means no one under the age of 17 ( FH's sis is 17).

Im not having kids ay my wedding either and I dare anybody to say something about it. Its very simple,. its YOUR wedding and its what YOU want. I dont know why people think they can dictate how you should do things. I have 23 first cousins and he has 30, there is no way we were having kids.

Yes. I am having a similar issue.

We made the conscious decision to have no child under the age of 18 invited to the shower or the wedding.

It is just too many children and their meals were not that much cheaper at my RH. (I am on a budget and I felt that $50 chicken fingers is absurd)

Plus, like you said, it is very difficult to have adult conversations while chasing and keeping an eye on kids, who are really left with nothing to do but run around hopped up on sugar.

I have someone who is very close to my mom threatening not to come if their child, who is 10, isn't invited. This person is under the impression that they are hurting me; but they are really hurting my mom. It's really hard, but I told my mom we can't give in for one person without creating resentment all around. My mom completely understands and agrees with me and our attitude at this point is 'We would love to have you but if you feel you can't part from your child for one evening then we understand if you can't make it.'

I was SO concerned about the child issue I did end up putting Adult Reception on my Reception cards. For the most part, people are looking to enjoy a moment away from their kids. But there are a select few who are intent on bringing them.

OH yeah we had alot of problems bc of this too...like you there would've been just too many kids. We were looking at a possibility of 40 kids or more, and that just turns into a zoo sorry. Not only that but our reception was also from 8:30-1:30am so i dont even see why you would bring your kids and keep them up that late...most kids get tired early so what are you going to do, force them to stay up and drag the poor kids, its not right.

But yes it caused problem, some people were upset and had things to say. Another thing they dont realize is they say whats the big deal but our kids meals werent free, it was actually ALOT for chicken fingers and fries, and i even calculated how much it would cost to have kids and it was a couple thousand extra. but the main point is Dh didnt want kids there, he explained why and i agreed with him, although i know it was me who probably took all the blame and looks like i dont like kids. His family didnt understand bc they said kids are always invited to family functions...well thats why dh didnt want kids lol, he has been to the family functions and has seen first hand what its like. 30-40 kids running around, parents dont watch them, infact his dad always ends up being the one watching them and this is something he was very concerned about...he didnt want his dad to take care of kids at the wedding and occupy himself with that, he wanted him to just enjoy himself and focus on his sons wedding. Its funny bc some who complained the most are ones with the most misbehaved kids.

It also didnt help that we went to other events in the beginning of our engagement, non family ones and there were kids and they were all over the place...during speeches they were crying and screaming the whole time right by where the person was giving a speech. None of us heard a word of what was said. After these events Dh did win his case about no kids at the wedding.

Stick to your guns and dont back down. Like you said its your wedding, so do what pleases you. It can be hard and hurtful at times. Also good that youre not making exceptions...we did only have our RB and FG and i was concerned even with that to tell you the truth...i was like oh great were having 2 kids at the wedding and ppl will get upset that we have them there but not their kids...but since it was JUST bp i said ok hopefully they understand...BUT let me say those kids did not stay long, this is why i dont understand why ppl want to bring kids. They were there just in the beginning, the RB fell asleep early on and they took him home, same with FG she also was real tired from early on and they had to leave early to take her home. If you say no kids then keep it no kids, bc if others see other kids there they will get mad saying uhmmm ok so their kids are ok but mine arent and will take it personally

weddings arent really appropriate for kids, especially if its in the evening

You are so right about the ones with the worst behaved kids complaining. Her son is ATROCIOUS!!!! He dumps food all over himself at family events and acts like a monster in general. Thanks for the support!

We don't have that many small kids in our families but I still put 'Adult Reception' - only one kid slipped through the cracks because I guess my aunt and uncle didn't understand but the kid is 13 and he's so quiet he wouldn't even be noticed lol. Then there is a 15 year old boy that had to come or else there would have been total drama but that's pretty close to the 17 year old mark and they're not going to be begging to go home with our full Viennese hour LOL. I just hope the other people who left their young kids don't get offended by seeing those two.

At the end of the day, it's not right to bring very young children to night weddings, most parents just set them loose and think the employees will somehow watch them.

I didnt want and kids there except for our son. But FH's sister just assumed that that rule didnt apply to her so her 5 yr old will be there and now my stepmom is coming from Florida so my 4 yr old brother will be there.

weddings are for adults!!!! I was never invited to a wedding as a child, my first wedding was my sisters where i was MOH.
My FH and I decided that for our wedding unless they were one of our nieces or nephews, they weren't invited!
I just don't understand , don't people want a night out w/o the kids anyways????

Yup no kids (except for wedding party) for us! It is my wedding and I do not want kids running around. Our daugter who is two, will leave immediately following the ceremony. I even had to find a wagon to bring her down the isle because I can't depend on her to throw flowers.

Basically, I budget for our pockets and I would not bring a baby to any other event that begins @ 8:00pm and ends at 12:00am.

If people don't like it, then they can stay home. The people that would be tacky enough to express this to you will most likely be the ones that put very little in an envelope.

SO FUNNY!!! And you know why I think they take it personally.... because subconsciously they know their freakin kids cant control themselves (or the other way around) so they assume that its a personal reason that they're not invited!

That's so funny!!! I am going through the same exact issue today. My cousin called me (FOR THE SECOND TIME) to once again ask me if she can bring her FOUR kids. She has 2 sets of twin boys - the oldest and 7 and the youngest are 3!

I told her once again NO....no kids. She was like -is it a money issue (FH & I are paying for the wedding ourselves) because they can share off of her plate.

I TOLD HER NO AGAIN...I don't want kids there and if I invite hers then I have to invite all of my other cousin's children.

She seems really upset with me - now I am not even sure if she is going to come to the wedding at all which is really upsetting because she is one of my closest cousins.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well maybe they need to start taking it personally then this way they'll actually control their kids when they go out lol.

NO KIDS. Unless they are from OOT (for example: FBIL's 3 kids, they are staying a week and traveling over 2000 miles)

We are only having FH's 3 nieces (16, 10, 5), and my 2 nieces (4, 2). No other children are allowed, but this too has caused some friction with our famililes. My 2 nieces and one of his nieces are the FG's, so I couldnt not invite the 2 sisters of one of the FG's.

This is your wedding, and do what you want. I went to a wedding last year, where the bride went as far as hiring 2 babysitters, so the parents could enjoy themselves, and it still turned out disastrous, with the kids whining to go home really early, and hanging on their parents crying. You want an adult affair, and that is what it should be. An evening of celebrating with dancing, drinking, eating and socializing which, unfortunately cant often be accomplished with young kids present.

Stick to your guns. People will get over it. The wedding is about you and FH, not their children.

we dont really have a kid policy.. there are no young kids on either side, and none of our friends have kids. we have one 15 year old and one 8 year old. everyone else is 17+

We didn't invite really extended relatives' kids, but they weren't really expecting otherwise and we didnt have a problem.

However, we didn't invite singles with +1s and one person complained.

I simply put ADULT RECEPTION on the reception card. They got the message and there was no issue or compliant. Who wants to chase little kids around all night anyway?

We had a no kids policy but we didn't have many kids to invite. It ultimately ended up offending only one person who decided not to come at all if she could not bring her bratty 6 year old. (at first they said they weren't going to come to the shower either because I didn't invite kids to it but when I said she could bring her daughter she STILL didn't come) So..... they probably would not have come either way and just wanted to start up some drama. Oh well, they missed out on a WONDERFUL time!

it's funny once upon a time people would ask a hotel for help finding a babysitter, and get on with their lives!
Now it seems like people are too frightened to do it.
I think a RH could really distinguish it's self by having a separate kids facility, like my gym does.
I do think having a mob of kids running around in circles kinda takes the elegance away. An outdoor daytime reception is a different story.
The folks who hired a sitter and put her in the BS seem to be very happy with their decision.

Its your decision not to have kids at the wedding.

Hopefully she comes around and lets you explain. I'm sorry you are going through this!

ETA: Did she just find this out by word of mouth? Did your Mom come out and mention it to her?

Yeah we are planning to have no kids. i just got an rsvp for 3 people....2 adults and their child =X Now what do I do?

Hey date twin, I had the same thing happen. I called my mom and she had my call my aunt, the mother of my cousin who included his almost 14yr old daughter. I am going to need to call myself though, since I never heard back. My aunt was even upset.
