At my firm (and everyone that I know of), we are not allowed to accept gift more than $100 in value from clients or anyone for that matter. Thats anyone frome the CEO down to the security guard. I dont know what the law states about traders but i know its just common practice (not illeagal) for most places.

PS: It used to be $50 but they upped it.

I get a raise every year and a bonus every year and my boss got me what I thought was a fabulous gift..(romance package weekend for 2 at the Waldorf Astoria, suite, champagne, strawberries, breakfast) and all sorts of vendors have been sending food and chocolates all month..

but like i said, I do not buy boss's gifts lol

same thing at my firm....anything over a certain amount of $$$ is not allowed....and even smaller gifts must be tracked in a 'gift log'...

I dont doubt your friend is getting $20K...thats actually sort of on the small side but understandable since the market is $hit. I just wanted to let eveyrone else know that those sort of bonuses arent the kind that EVERYONE firmwide gets - it depends on your performance.

Stef, we have the same exact gift policy too. Plus, I am bound by the CFA rules, or else they'll take away my charter

Steph... I don't know how the gifts work .. But they come in and today is the last full day I think I got an enevlope full of gift cards with diff amts and on the front was which co had sent them..

Maybe its bad... But since I don't give out I am not sure about it....

I want to go to Law School...But I don't think I have it in me.!

Edited to say.. Sorry if this upset anyone.. I just got the gift bag and I was shocked and now wonderd what I should get the boss if anything.. Old school MOm says no.. Last year we all chipped in...

Well, I know that this post is a good kick in the but for me to work on a better job!!!! Some people's bonuses are a good portion of my yearly salary LOL

I am not insulted or upset by the posts, cause everyone knows that some people make lots of money and some people don't. I am not in the poor house, but me and FH are both just starting out, so we have to save our pennies. Hopefully someday I will be the one GIVING these nice bonuses!!!!!

in our bank bonuses are based on which division you work in. If its revenue generating, then its based on how the group did, but if its support function, then it depends how the company overall did.

This isn't a kick in the ass for anyone to get a better job. The market is so bad right now, not even those getting insane bonus' or perks is safe. If you have a job that is somewhat secure, keep it!

Wow, that's some gifts you got.

I work for a financial boutique and even though our firm spends crazy money compared to others the bonuses you are talking about are 'so last year' This days no one except most senior people expect much. And personal gifts are stricly not allowed both ways unless it' someting small and symbolic, also gifts from clients are distributed through a lottery. No one is allowed to take anything home even if they alone work with the client who sends gift.
Can't wait to tell my co-workers about Theresa's company ( and we thought we are lucky we didn't have lay offs ) who knew

If you're asking me, then answer is no, I am not in CPA and don't do anything in related to that kind of a position. However, I do work on the support (non-revenue) side of the business and am happy with that.
