the reality of bonuses

i also work for a financial co...investment house...

some ppl get small salaries (kind like a waitress) and make the bulk of their money from their BONUS

others get a good salary and end of year gifts and if theyre very lucky this year w/cost cutting &all bonus from company

i have received big check bonuses in the past and so that not everyone is so jealous...

if you get a 10,000 bonus you only take home 5000

also if you don't declare money gifts at end of year to IRS you can be caught later on down the road for tax fraud...i for one wouldn't risk it...


i just feel sorry for all those HUSBANDs out there that are OUT of WORK b/c of the economy...

were lucky me and dh both have good jobs

Ronnie: i dont know exactly how bonuses for admins work since Im not an admin. At my old job I had an admin working for me and her bonus was based on performance. I will say that if your friend who works at CSFB is getting $20K she should be thanking her lucky stars because this has been a bad year for the street AND Csfb.

As for people being upset by this thread... that just seems like sour grapes to me. Why should someone not be able to share being happy about something they have because others arent as fortunate? No one objects to having a girl post about her $200K wedding even if most of us dont have that much to spend on it. This is no different in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

Whoa.... I am not upset by this thread. I'm actually getting a kick out of it. I did however agree with Catch, that's all. I myself make a pretty decent (sp?) salary... as for bonus, eh, not too much, but I cannot complain about my salary. That's all. I was agreeing because I could see how others might be offended....

I don't know about performance bc I know working hard since college pays off...

I got a 10k bonus in feb and I really took home 6300... They took 33%...

I claim head of house hold on my taxes.....So tax season I always balance out..

I am sorry for those who are out of work and who aren't so fortunate...

I wasn't expcecting any of these gifts.. and Our Holiday Party is Monday.. Lunch catered in if that makes people happy!

I also work for an investment bank and have worked at many of the major ones over the last 12 years. It is definately illegal to accept gifts from clients over $100. We just actually received a reminder email regarding this today. The bonuses that Theresa stated her friends are getting seem alittle on the high side in this enivornment but depending on what division they are working in could be probable. I have never though heard of an admin asst having a contract stating her bonus numbers.

Regarding the gifts though, my boss is very generous to me financially during xmas time and I do buy him a small gift. I buy him something because we are friendly outside of work as well. I got him a boxed corkscrew set from macys and nice bottle of wine. He though is the first boss I have ever given anything too.

I am just happy to have a job in this economy. I work for a publishing company that narrowly missed filing for bankruptcy this year. I would love bonuses like the ones being discussed here but they usually only come with working in the financial arena. I would never survive in one of those places. I'm in HR so we aren't revenue makers but our company gives a small bonus to every employee. Its a way to thank everyone for their hard work but also not bankrupt the company. I love the people I work with and enjoy coming to work everyday. That's what matters to me. I am not upset with the post but I think in this economy it is hard to hear how some companies give bonuses as though the market is not in any trouble. JMO

Fletch: Companies that are giving big bonuses usually HAVE to so they can get good people because it is standard in the industry and to make up for being a tough place to work most of the time. And in cases like ibanks, they are not going out of business no matter how large the bonus pool is - they are cash cows even in a down market.

I'm absolutely aware of that and understand why large bonuses are given at certain places. They need to However, when you hear about the state of the economy and all that is going on on the world, hearing that places have the ability to hand out $1000 gift cards, isn't easy.

These posts are so amusing. Mycompany is not doing to well but my bosses just took me to a really nice restaurant this afternoon (I'm still have a buzz from the wine) and they both gave me gift cards to two of my favorite stores b/c they know that I haven't been shopping in months since I'm trying to save money for this wedding and a house.
Why are people posting how much of a bonus they get? We won't even post how much we pay for a photographer or flowers. Just my opinion

Maybe not but when someone says that they can pay for their entire wedding you pretty much get the point that they made a huge bonus. Listen I just came back from a really good lunch and had a really good wine.
