OMG..I would dread that time in the summer making the sauce.....and my fathers beloved Fig Tree!!! He wraps it up at the end of the year like it is a baby. HE even built shelter out of wood,to make sure it doesnt get cold..even after all the layers of vinyl he wrapped it in for insulation...hahahahaaaa

does anyones mother sunbath eggplants in the summer?? my mom lays out sliced eggplant and as she calls it...tans them in the sun....

when your grandparents only speak Italian and your parents speak both languages...you have no choice but to learn the language...

Ant the fig tree - sameee here girl! my father ties it, wraps it, uses wood -everything!! and we have two of them - the whirte fig tree and the red fig tree!!!

Hi everyone---i havent been on Liweddings in forever because i have been so busy with work..
BUT i have to tell you I am laughing right now because this thread is so great!

The traditions are hysterical and i can relate to almost all of them...

So proud to be Italian!

we bring the tomatoes to jersey and make them in my uncles backyard b/c he has the hook up outside his house for the big burners to boil the jars.. lol

How about the brick oven pizza?? my favorite memory of being in Sicily was watching my aunt make the brick oven pizza in the country house. we would spend the whole day in campagna making the pizzas and then hangout all night with the family til all hours of the morning. I miss those times so much

awww you just brought back memories of Sicily,,,the brick oven was in the open garage...below the house.......then we would go to the beachhouse and pick lemons and figs.....we would come home with bushels....

we're talking about all this yummy food but what about the food that we hate but were sometimes forced to eat? Two foods that my parents love to cook that I could definitely live without: snails and tripe

TRIPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yuck....and dont you know,,,my DAD made sure that the Floral Terrace offered it and we had it served during out CH...Myfamily went crazy over it!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny story,,,my sil came to Italy with us a few years ago and she is an animal lover!!!!!!! so my aunt is serving dinner and WE all know it is Rabbit..but we dont tell my sil. SHE thinks it is chicken and she is eating it up and loving it. After dinner, we still dont tell her. The next day we left our family in napoles and headed to Siciliy to stay with my dad's family. So we are at the beach and we are int he water and I am signing that song..'little bunny foofoo hopping through the forest'..and she just keeps looking at me and finally asks why are you singing that song? I asked her if she enjoyed the meal that zia made the other night in Naples and she was like,,yeah it was great.....I said ' what do you think you ate'? she said 'chicken'...I said nope...'little BUNNY foo foo hopping through the forest'...OMG,,she wanted to die..My sil ate bread the rest of our visit in Italy!!!!!!!!

awwww i feel bad for your sil but i have to confess i love rabbit (FH thinks I'm crazy lol)
oh and about the tripe guess what? Russo's serves it at cocktail too so my parents are happy now thank god i'll be in the bridal suite so i don't have to see it lol

ugh TRIPE and octopus have to be on my list - followed by rabbit

i HATE tripe - the look of it - the SMELL when its cooking just drives me crazzzzy - i leave my house when my mom is cooking it - bc i cant bear the smell.

i will also have tripe during my cocktail hr - and octopus - and rabbit too

Has anyone finished making homemade sausage recently?? I was helping my FH's family make like 200 lbs of Sausage.. it was insane.

Silly tradition.. but can you believe that if a woman has her period, shes not allowed near the sausage or it will all go bad???

yea my mom says the same thing. she always refused to bake or make homemade stuff when she had her aunt flo because she said that it wouldn't turn out good

OMG - i never knew that abt the sausage - but the SAME RULE applied for the sauce - if a girl has her period - she is NOT allowed to touch the tomatoes - or there will be BAD sauce all year!

yes I heard that about flowers and the tomatoes but never about sausage.
I like this thread you learn more traditional stuff .
