i looked into il fornetto and lundy's on emmons ave in shepshead bay.. they are both expensive.. but for a saturday night in the middle of summer they were the only two that have good food and were willing to give up their space for a 50 person party at 7pm.THEY WERE BOTH VERY VERY VERY EXPENSIVE

im having my rehearsal dinner at my house - my brother (who owns a deli) will most likely cater it ... my sister and brother had it in my house b4 they got married - IMO i think its less stressful, more casual and less money

Re: **Official Italian Bride Thread**
OMG! I missed 2 days and you guys are on a roll! Here's my 2 cents in a nutshell!I have started liking tripe recently, love veal, love rabbit most of the time, hate snails (actually, I love it the French way). Love seeing my old comforter wrapped around the fig tree and get drunk off of the smell of tomatoes cooking in the giant sauce pots in August. There's nothing like a simple plum tomato and bread sandwich in the middle of making the sauce. My father has been BANNED from making wine this year b/c it stinks up the whole house for months and my wedding is in November.
Italian was my first language but like some other posters, my brother did not know a word of English in kindergarten, SO, at 3 yrs old, my family switched to English in the house. We both did fine with our English, but my brother is a better Italian speaker than I am. My Italian is always always a mixture of Italian, Barese, & Abruzzese in one sentence. And of course, Napoletan now too b/c of FH. We will speak both languages to our kids but our parents will be relied on heavily for Italian, and they will go to Italian school at an early age.
HELP! I am not Sicilian so can someone please tell me what panella is? And is there another word for it that I might recognize?

Re: **Official Italian Bride Thread**
DA77 panelli look a lil like pancakes onyl they're rectangular and not round. basically they're made with the flour of chick peas and deep fried in lots of oil. we eat them on heros and we pile on like 4 or 5 of them for the ultimate panelli sandwich. some people love adding extra salt or lemon or even ricotta cheese to them. i don't know where u live but if you're ever in brooklyn go to gino's on 18th avenue or joe's focacceria on ave. u and get a panelli sandwich...u won't regret it
edited to write chick peas - i wrote ceci beans before oops lol

Panelli is basically chick-pea dough seasoned and cooked in a pan until it thickens and gets sticky. Then it is refrigerated for a couple of hrs - and then sliced and fried. it is eaten with italian bread, and usually we add lemon, or ricotta.
This is the best I can remember - my mom makes it every now and then
Sicilian ladies - if I made a mistake - pls correct me - TIA!

Re: **Official Italian Bride Thread**
This thread has me saying 'omg' out loud at my desk agreeing with alot of these traditions. There was an Italian thread that went on for pages awhile back - Rosaria that was the panettone thread - you had me crying from laughter at my desk telling the story of your father
I actually spoke Italian first then learned English in school - I use to come home crying to my mom because the other kids would make fun of me saying 'why are you speaking Chinese?' I told my mom she is only allowed to speak Italian to my kids - I want them to learn it like I did -
FH isn't Italian - and I've tried teaching him words here and there - for whatever reason the only words that stuck were 'piano piano' and 'sei troppa bella' - which he says to my nonna -
The funniest has to be watching FH and my nonna communicate - my grandmother doens't speak a stitch of English and FH obviously soesn't understand Italian - YET they will stand there and ask each other questions in their respected language...it goes something like this
Nonna: Come Stai Jiiimmmie
FH: Work was ok
Nonna: E la tua Momma?
FH: It's so beautiful out right Nonna?
Nonna: Stamattina ho parlato con Luigi...stano bene
FH: Yea I can't wait to eat I'm starving
Nonna: bene bene
This goes on for like 10 minutes ALL THE TIME - my whole family stands there and laughs at them...

Thumbellina - thats sooo funny the convo with your nonna and FH!!!
I kinda relate bc FH understands sicilian a little bit NOW (he is napolitan) - but when my nonna talks to him - he doesnt understand her and she only speaks sicilian and she talks soo fast - so he will sit there and nod and laugh at her - and just play along - and then I'll be like - did you understand her - and he'll be like 'not a word' and it;s so funny bc he'll start hysterical laughing with her - not havinga clue what shes talking abt

The funny thing is all of FH's friends are Italian/Sicilian - so he's picked up words here and there from being around them and their families - but I don't understand any southern dialect -(We're from Northern Italy) so when they talk I just stand there trying to make out what they are saying - I ususally understand two words out of the whole conversation...FH turns to me and is always like 'this is how I feel talking to YOUR family'
So I try not to make too much fun of him...
