Re: **Official Italian Bride Thread**
I LOVE this thread.through blood, I am not Italian, but my step father is half italian, half Puerto Rican. somehow I have acquired NOTHING of my blood family, but speak Spanish fairly fluently and am very 'latin' LOL
another weird effect of my upbringng is that I am in LOVE with Italy. I go there as much as I can, watch RAI all the time, and Italy is MY TEAM in soccer. (I even have the blue red and white Puma 'ITALIA' sneakers and I will see them at the WORLD CUP on my HONEYMOON!) I make my own sauce, cook italian food more often than not, and make every attempt to learn and speak the language when I am there. also, living in Brooklyn, the Italian/American influence is felt by many.
both fh and I want to move there (he is from Central America) and my cousin already did (Milano). She LOVES living there.
so, I am a mutt, reading, relating to, and LOVING this thread...
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you do have a GTG, let this non-italian mutt tag along...
Thanks girls and please keep posting

just to interject...the kids will be BOMBARDED with english language tv, books etc...and they learn language quickly..I plan to speak to my children in spanish, english, and italian (since I hope to live there!)
you could definitely have an 'all italian' speaking home and your child will pick up english just as well as italian from outside forces. he'll be bilingual before kindergarten!

I have always heard that in order for a child to pick up more than one language they must have people around them that speak to them in that language specifically. Like if I want my baby to speak Italian then I have to speak to them just in Italian. If I switch between languages then it's not good for the kid

I don't know...in my family, we all speak english and Spanish and all the kids do. but you need to really enforce the second language in the home, since English is kind of a default language, ya know. so if you speak to the child only in italian, they will learn everything else in school and from Dora the Explorer and such...at least that's how it's been in my experience with english/spanish

Re: **Official Italian Bride Thread**
Definitely, my parents spoke to me in Italian from as far back as I can remember and took me to Italy for the first time when I was 6 years old. My dad till this day continues to speak to me in Italian and I am so glad they did and still do because I learned all my Italian from them.

it's been the same for me too - ever since i can remember i was talking to my parents and grandparents in italian. your kids will learn english no matter what because between school, their friends, tv etc. it's gonna be in their face all the time. that's why it's really important to stress the italian at home if you want them to grow up understanding it and speaking it and i really think that the earlier u start the better

I think I am confused LOL...in my head, I was saying basically what you are saying...that the child should be spoken to in Italian, since they will learn english here...at least I THINK that's what you said...that your father spoke to you in Italian, and I assume you just learned english anyway, no.

I agree with you girls...I actually went to Italian school my whole life...But realistically speaking, we live here and we speak with most people (other than family) in English, so our kids are not going to get what we have...
I know so many people whose parents were born and raised there and they barely speak Italian...so I'm thinking it must be hard

Yes but my parents weren't trying to teach me another language aside from English and Italian such as Spanish.
IMO, I think 3 languages may be overwhelming for a child.

oh, no I agree. I wasn't thinking about the Spanish, since that was for me..with a different situation. we will speak spanish/english in my house, with Sunday calcio as my kids italian lesson. no, defihitely 2 languages is best.
good luck to you girls.
