Until LIW has a polling option, i will set up a poll for book #2.
List your suggestions here and we can pick the top 5 or so and then vote when the Lovely Bones discussion starts.

Re: Poll for Book #2
I just finished reading both 'The Crimson Petal and the White' by Michel Faber and 'Middlesex' by Jeffrey Eugenides. Both we totally awesome...The Crimson Petal probably wouldn't fly too well here - It's set in Victorian England amongst a group of prostitutes, and MIddle sex is about a hermaphrodite (baby raised as a girl until age 14 and then finds out she is really a boy) and is fascinating. It's fiction. While both are really good, I'd have to go with Middlesex for this board.
I also recently read The Corrections and thought it was some of the best writing I have ever read...

Re: Poll for Book #2
Ive already suggested it but Topping from Below is a fast read that is definitely a conversation starter. Its about a women getting involved with a sado-machist to find out who killed her sister. Some really sick stuff! Not exactly literature but well written and completely different. I dont read those books often but its great to get a book club started since EVERYONE will have something to say about it.
I wont add it onto the poll unless a few other people are interested in reading it as well.

Re: Poll for Book #2
I can put it up on my website. So if we get a list of 5 suggestions, I will set it up and let everyone here vote. Then we can wait until a certain day, and I will announce the winner.
Do you want to use the first 5 suggestions?

Re: Poll for Book #2
I am interested in reading Topping from Below. I read the description and I think it is something different from what I usually read (and I think that is the fun part of doing the book club....reading something you normally wouldn't) JMO

Re: Poll for Book #2
I agree...the best books for a book club is one that causes enough controversy that EVERYONE will have something to say about it!
I joined because I wanted to read books I normally wouldn't pick up.
Does it matter if it's fiction or non-fiction? When did this board start? I feel like I missed something

Re: Poll for Book #2
Star: It was the topic of a bunch of threads on the NW board until we asked LIW to make a seperate board for the book club. The first book is The Lovely Bones and starts next month. Read the post 'The Lovely Bones' on this board for further info.

Re: Poll for Book #2
The Red Tent is an amazing book Girl with Pearl Earring is also great
I suggested in another thread that we do a biograhy/autobiography, a 'fluffy' but meaningful book, a classic etc...that will help to exposure us all to new works. I think we should stick with things that make us think.

Re: Poll for Book #2
From what I can tell on Amazon, Middlesex is a hardcover only? Is that right? If so, Im going to exclude it from the first round.
So far we have
Topping from Below Good In Bed Red Tent Middlesex (if in paperback)
More suggestions please.

Re: Poll for Book #2
if we do a classic, jane austen's 'pride and prejudice' is a good, easy read...
