Puppy!!!

Original post by futuremrsmultari

FH and I have committed to getting a puppy when we get back from the honeymoon.

We know we'll 'know' when we find the right puppy but I at least want some ideas of breeds....

So far, we've fallen in love with: a cockapoo, a long haired chihuahua and a shiba inu.

I think we've rulled the chihuahua out...just too small for us....any other ideas? We're in an apartment complex for now but I plan on lots of morning and nightly walks and going home on my lunch break for walks....we don't want anything huge but we don't want anything too small...any suggestions?!?!

I'm so excited!

we're going to get a puppy too when we move. We HAVE to get a hypoallergenic dog bc fh is allergic otherwise to many dogs. So bc of that it will be either a maltese or shitzu and also have to find out what other dogs are hypoallergenic but those 2 i know definitely are.

Theyre both small dogs so it would be good for you plus no shedding since they dont have dog hair

most dogs mixed with poodles are hypoallergenic....there are tons...sadly poodles are so not my style...i don't want to settle, it's a big decision! i really want a bulldog - FH says it's too big...

yeah i took poodles off the list bc i dont want one. I love bulldogs but can't get them. Good luck, you'll find the perfect dog.

What about boston terriers, they stay small and theyre great dogs

I first wanted a bulldog but yeah they shed.. BUT the are soooooooo cute.

The show rob and big 'meaty' the dog is sooo cute

i know they are adorable, and i do love french bulldogs...i wouldnt mind the shedding that much bc you can clean, my biggest problem is fh being allergic to them

the shelters can be hard sometimes. When my friend was looking for a puppy i suggested northshore bc of all the puppies that need a home. Well when we went we looked at so many dogs but the problem is that since many of them are mutts and they dont know the mix, they dont know much info about them. Now if you have a house that is fine but if you live in an apartment and cant have a big dog then that can be a problem. We did see a couple of puppies there and she was interested but when we asked how big they'll get they didn't know. Another problem is we also saw a few other dogs and some were real sick, one puppy she fell in love with and wanted had a heart condition, now the problem was the puppy was a gift for her bf for their apartment together though and she was getting a dog bc his just passed away and she couldnt get a dog that had a heart problem and god forbid it dying soon after. Not only that but if you have money for all the vet bills its great to help the dogs medical conditions but if not it can be hard.

iF YOU have a house and dont have any problems with size of dog then its great and you can find puppies, maybe not your first try but if you go in a couple of times.

So sometimes its not that people dont want to get from a shelter but it can be hard at times.

CONGRATS!!!!

Be careful with Shiba Inus. My DH grew up with them. They are 'mouthy' and talkative dogs adn VERY high energy!!!

If yu are deidcated to really serious training then they are great dogs but they are more work than most!!!

I love my Shih Tzu! Pics are in my album. My dog is 25 pounds- huge for a shih tzu! Normall they are about 10-15 pounds. They are great because they have long hair, but there hair does not shed and is allergy free! Good Luck!

I also say Shih Tzu. We started out with one, but she's such a great dog that we mated her and kept 3 out of the 5 puppies. They are so well behaved and friendly. When I move out, I want to get my own Shih Tzu

I have always wanted a shih tzu as well.. How is the grooming on them?

Its not soo bad. We get them haircuts about 4 times a year. Their hair can get slighlty matted if you dont bathe them or brush them. Honestly, we dont brush them that often, and their hair is pretty good.

My Avi absolutely hates it too!!!! I have to bribe him with food to dress him up. I had an ugly sweater party over the holidays and he wore a sweater too, but only because people kept feeding him and he was distracted. He will do anything to get clothes off!

This is true. which is why private breeders are great. Also most are soooooo much cheaper than puppy mill stores. When my mom was looking for her yorkie she went into a store and they wanted 1300 for a stringy really thin, poor coated puppy. A few days later she saw an ad in the paper and went to look at a breeders house and found the cutest, extremely healthy mini yorkie pup for 400. She was paper and crate trained already which was fantastic. Puppy store dogs are not crate or paper trained since they are used to pottying where they sleep.

How about a golden retriever, or a husky, or a lab of some kind?

FH and I have the same agreement. After the wedding we are getting a Bull Mastiff! Can't wait! Good luck!

Pugs are my absolute favorite dogs. They are so loveable and just want to be around you. They are smart and funny as all helll.

FH and I will probably get another one once we buy a house. Ollie is the best thing that has happened to us.

Hey for anyone interested in learning more about pure bred dogs, breed specific health concerns or anything concerning a specific breed (ie personality traits, size, exercise needs etc) feel free to FM me. I will be graduating Veterinary school in May and am very interested in helping people to make the right decision when it comes to buying/adopting a pet!
