Re: Same Sex Marriage

I feel like gays have it hard..inner feelings thru puberty, coming out to family, workplace situations...always being known as 'the gay friend' or ' gay sister'...they are people who go thru life overcoming such obstacles. These are people with rights and are only in it for the pursuit of happiness. Britney Spears can run off to Vegas and get married... Elizabeth Taylor can get married 8 times!! Michael can marry Lisa Marie, but two men in love for decades raising well balanced children together can't become married?

It seems like we only hold marriage sacred when it come to homosexuals. with divorce and infidelity on a constant rise, who are we to keep gays out of our 'elite, conservative club' of married couples

Janice I agree with you on alot of that. I also think that people like Elizabeth Taylor and Britney Spears (and many many other celebrities, for that matter) are helping to destroy the sanctity of marriage by treating husbands/wives like underwear that they change on a daily basis. I also have a huge problem with people who obviously marry for money, 'papers', or some other convenience (their careers, for example). Celebrities like J.Lo are virtually ridiculing marriage at this point.

I can't believe that this is even still an issue...I feel like it would solve so many other issues if marriage was allowed. It would not force gay people to marry into opposite sex relationships, leading to infidelity, disease, and heartache.

I get your point but I actually think that people who hide their homosexuality by involving an innocent pawn to hide their sexuality are cowards because you are endangering the lives of others becasue that person does not have the strength to stand up for what they beleive in. No one said that we all had to agree but at least let your spouse know the true foundation of the relationship.

I feel that people who are against gay marriage take it personally- like if gay people are married- what does it say about MY marriage...
It's basically all selfish and fear of change...
With regards to religious upbringing- I don't understand what your relationship with jesus and your promise of afterlife has to do with stopping gay marriage?

I am not trying to put you on the spot, but you said you feel it is wrong. By 'it' do you mean gay marriage or homosexuality? Just trying to understand.

your statement generalizes..I for one an not for same sex marraige but I am not on a campaign to stop it. I am not selfish nor fear change but when asked what my beliefs are I will tell you. I think I may be a minority when it comes to issues regardless of gay marraige, abortion or the other hot topics..I have my opinion but I dont judge others for agreeing or disagreeing with me ..thats the true problem. People forcing their beliefs on others..wether you are pro or anti. Just respect other people's opinions.
The law cant force me to accept gay marraige but I wont rally against it either. I just live and let live..with my own opinions.

Re: Same Sex Marriage

Well, I hardly ever post over here, but I just read through this entire thread and I am better off for it (for once! haha, just kidding). Personally, I am 100% FOR gay marriage. I just don't see why anyone should have ANY say in someone else's marriage. I did not need society's 'approval' to marry, why should someone who's gay, and a normal human being, have to have society or the state's 'approval'? When it comes down to it, they are humans and normal people who work and contribute to the community the same way any one of us do.
I certainly respect everyone's opinions, including those that differ with mine, but I just have a hard time when people can't see past the labels in our society. There is no difference between a gay person or a straight person other than their sexual orientation. No one cares about MY private sex life, why should I care about anyone else's, gay or heterosexual? Just my opinion.

I guess I am refering to people who use religion as their primary motivation for not allowing what is essentially a societal issue that has nothing to do with religion. While I understand that Christianity and God did play a role in the founding of this Country, the founding fathers also understood the need for change and growth- which is why we have attracted so many different peoples and religions- we have to accept that and not cling to Christian thought as the defining ideology of our social principles.

I think it's an issue of freedom- andd I do liken it to any other civil right- rights of women, minorities, etc... I think all are provided equal protection under the law and to me that includes marriage.
So while I understand that the issue is a personal one, and while I understand that not everyone will agree, I do not respect the opion of those that aren't in favor anymore than I respect the options of those that agreed with separate but equal in the 50s.

I also want to say, if you think 'live and let live' and don't rally around it is fine- it is VERY different from those that crusade against it.

These are the types of debates I tend to avoid.

I am bent on the issue... i can go both ways with it (pun intended).

I can appreciate everyone's honesty...but it only leads me to question, do people who are against it or not sure see homosexuals as people?
