A strong America must also value the institution of marriage. I believe we should respect individuals as we take a principled stand for one of the most fundamental, enduring institutions of our civilization. Congress has already taken a stand on this issue by passing the Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 by President Clinton. That statute protects marriage under Federal law as the union of a man and a woman, and declares that one state may not redefine marriage for other states. Activist judges, however, have begun redefining marriage by court order, without regard for the will of the people and their elected representatives. On an issue of such great consequence, the people's voice must be heard. If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage.

The outcome of this debate is important -- and so is the way we conduct it. The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God's sight.

We should not hate or persecute those that we do not understand. Easier said than done, but the world would be a lot more tolerant if we lived by those standards.

SOMEONE WROTE THIS...AND ALL I AM SAYING IS THAT THIS CANNOT EVEN BE ACHIEVED ON THIS SITE.

PERSECUTION OF THOSE THAT ARE NOT UNDERSTOOD GOES ON ON THIS SITE. ITS GOING ON IN THIS VERY THREAD.

OK. Enough with the frickin drama.

No one is being persecuted - no one is being harassed and if you're suffering from what is said, get off the damn thread.

Kelly, if you think that is what persecution is, then you do not even understand what that means. I am not trying to insult you, but I am shocked that you would suggest that this thread can be compared to religious or racial persecution. I think that belittles the experience of all people who have been persecuted.

Oh good god. Disagreeing with someone's point of view - a view they posted on a thread knowing that it would be discussed - is NOT hostility or being mean. It's called a discussion, maybe even a debate - if we could get beyond the damn drama.

Next...If you go back and read the thread in its entirety, you will see that people are being hostile to each other...

I curse a lot - 'damn' is me being polite.

Believe whatever you want because it's been explained to you at least a half dozen times that NO one was being hostile and you still choose to throw that word around. All I've done was ask for the drama to be dropped so people can actually discuss the issues if they want to. That's not being hostile or mean nor am I persecuting you.

Back to the topic, I have tow clients, that are gay, they own a business together, live together, and they are marreid although not legal. One of them has alzheimers and it is so wonderful to see how the other individual cares for the other. Is is so unfair and sad that they will never be married!! They ahve also had to jump through hoops to make sure thier assets are treated as if they were married.

We have other married couples that make their wife sit in the lobby when he come in to discuss taxes.
