Spin-off to Jen's Catholic church- If you are not baptizing your children..

Original post by swags1016

how do you think they will feel when they are older??

My mother is Jewish and my dad Roman Catholic so we were raised with neither religion. Growing up I didn't have a 'sense' of belonging to to one group or another. I felt like an outsider on both sides. It sucked to be honest. Now that we are having a child, we are going to have it baptized but are searching for a church that we will feel comfortable with.

While I completely understand when you say you don't agree with the Catholic Church, how do you think your children will feel when they are a little older and their friends have religion classes and confirmations, bar mitzahs and such and they don't? I am curious if you have thought about it from their stand point being that I was raised like that.

So until I decide which religion is for me I should just stay away from all holidays? And my son shouldnt participate in anything either?

BUT you don't celebrate ALL holiday you celebrate catholic (and catholic denom.) holidays...

Do you have a Passover dinner?

I understood what you meant..you use the holidays to gtg...got it

right. I dont celebrate 'the holiday', we dont go to church, its not really about anything religious... Its a tradition of family getting together on those days and doing things that have nothing to do with those holidays.. like eating candy, the bunny rabbit, and receiving gifts.. Thats as far as it goes.

Bottom Line is there are some Holidays that are religious based and if you don't believe in the religion WHY ARE YOU CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY???

This I will agree with BUT if my brother is not a practicing catholic and my SIL is Jewish & she celebrates the Jewish holidays with her family does that mean my 1 year old niece should not be allowed to enjoy celebrating Christmas with the rest of the family?

Of course se can enjoy the festivities...EVERYONE likes to watch the lighting of the NYC christmas tree...but they don't go home and PRACTICE THE RELIGION!

They are there to appreciate the novelty and festivity of the religion...

THEN why do it on a catholic holiday?
ETA...because your family
does the rest of your family not believe like you?

Ummm usually because we have OFF from school then and... some of the family we are getting together with are catholics.

What does the Christmas tree have to do with being Catholic?

I agree :) Im not debating. Just telling why I still celebrate.

I also celebrate them on that day because most of the people we celebrate with have off from their jobs no matter what day of the week it falls on.

Jenn,

I am sorry if this turned into a debate. I didn't mean for it to!

I, personally was just a bit offended at the insistence of the holidays being CATHOLIC holidays.

Maybe I should have stayedaway from this board like I have in the past.

i dont mind the debate really...i just think it is goig to be two peoples opinions that don't agree....
neither of us will agree with the other and that is fine...

If you feel the need to stay away from the board because of it..well that is your choice but i am not like that..I al always up for listening and learning!

Hi Amy

I believe because they consider it a

So when Catholic kids participate they arent celebrating anything.

I do know a girl who is pagan (?) and considers it her holiday.

Are there any non Irish people here who eat Corn beef and cabbage and maybe drink a beer on St. Patricks day..

NO DRAMA please really just a question.

Well, thats the same reason non catholic people may want to participate in catholic holidays.. because its fun or tradition. We dont need any other reason. I dont think that's wierd.

I am IRISH and i don't eat it

I think beer is not exactly a irish thing...
people drink beer at ALL holidays lolololol

but to answer not exactly the question but just my own opinion...
I don't consider St. Patricks Day to be the same as a religious holiday..
We all go party and drink up on memorial day and labor day too..i don't look at these holidays as being the same as a RELIGIOUS holiday
