Spin-off to Jen's Catholic church- If you are not baptizing your children..

Original post by swags1016

how do you think they will feel when they are older??

My mother is Jewish and my dad Roman Catholic so we were raised with neither religion. Growing up I didn't have a 'sense' of belonging to to one group or another. I felt like an outsider on both sides. It sucked to be honest. Now that we are having a child, we are going to have it baptized but are searching for a church that we will feel comfortable with.

While I completely understand when you say you don't agree with the Catholic Church, how do you think your children will feel when they are a little older and their friends have religion classes and confirmations, bar mitzahs and such and they don't? I am curious if you have thought about it from their stand point being that I was raised like that.

Oct2004bride...I was reading through a lot of what you and a few others have said...and i have to agree.

Its not to say that everyone isn't welcome to get together with their families for the 'holidays'. That is FINE. Its a nice time of year when people get together..

However...I have to say too that saying you 'celebrate Christmas' but don't believe in religion/organized religion is hypocritical. It was given its name for a reason..CHRISTmas. Simple as that...its about recognizing why we celebrate in the first place-I love giving/receiving presents as much as the other person but I always remember why we're doing it and recognize my faith.

That is also why i am a weirdo and can't write 'x-mas' in most situations. Kind of negates the whole symbolism. Just my opinion!!

I dont think its hypocritical. Eating Candy has nothing to do with Jesus and neither does giving and recieving gifts. They do however happen on the same day.

Did God mention easter bunnies in the bible? Nope... Did he talk about Santa? Nope.. So why cant we celebrate it without being hypocriticial? I dont celebrate Jesus...

Thats just how we do it. I just believe to each his own and if were not hurting anyone why is it such a big deal?

i agree with you on the easter thing -- the easter bunny, eggs and candy are all secular symbols

however, there is catholic symbolism to gift-giving at christmas. Yes, God doesn't mention Santa Claus -- that's a secular symbol for kids. The gift giving that we do represents the gifts of gold, frankensense and mur, given to the baby Jesus by the 3 wise men.

Plus, the legend of Santa Claus is taken from a Catholic saint, St. Nicholas

If people want to celebrate St Patricks day and eat corned beef and wear green, that's cool because they are showing recognition to the fact that they are celebrating Irish heritage.

But for someone to say they are celebrating Easter with the Easter bunny and candy with no recognition of Jesus is wrong. This is the holiest day of the Catholic/Christian calendar and it just seems that people who don't believe in the sacrifice Jesus made shouldn't even PRETEND like they are celebrating a holiday with the bunny and candy.

The easter bunny and candy have NOTHING to do with Jesus, so why is that wrong??? That makes NO sense. I have VERY religious friends who WILL NOT celebrate Easter with candy or easter bunnies etc because it has NOTHING to do with Jesus.

But they are associated with Easter. It just seems like America is too involved in the materialisic, instant gratification of holidays without the meaning behind them.

I'm not saying I don't, but some people don't believe in the meaning behind the holidays and thats o.k. People should be able to do what they want as long as they are not hurting others.

Bunnies and Candy also have NOTHING to do with the meaning of Easter, so it shouldnt matter.

well, I would rather not go back and forth about this so we will just agree to disagree.

IMO...it just looks like people want to take the fun, convenient, materialistic part of the religion and not bother ever learning the meaning, without putting in the effort to appreciate and learn the roots to all of these 'fun gift giving' holidays. It seems very shallow actually.
If you don't agree with the religion and it's practices...by all means that is your perrogative...But there are plenty of other times of the year to gather and give gifts...why are you choosing the CATHOLIC/CHRISTIAN holidays?

and i agree with Moe...we just disagree

Thank You!

As I am not catholic & would NEVER go to a catholic church by choice, I am a Christian and know that the holidays are mine to celebrate!
