Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES
After reading yesterdays post, it seems clear that people who do not have police officers in their family are very critical to this police officer not getting indicted or maybe police officers in general. My husband came home this morning after working 14 hours all night and told me about his grueling night. To hear such comments like a police officer shows stupidity when making a mistake or not having his wits is extremely upsetting to me when people know NOTHING about what goes into this job.
My question is: Do friends of yours who are not from a police officer family show negativity toward police or are they supportive since they are your friend?

I think that people say negative things about police because most of us have been on the 'other side', meaning they have been pulled up by some damna$$ of a traffic cop who is just trying to increase his salary by giving out a few extra tickets. However, surely it doesn't mean that all cops are stupid and/or insensitive! There are lot of heros in that field, I am sure! I just never met one! And may be it’s a good thing…

I am not a cop nor is anyone in my family but I got to the #1 'cop school' in america and I have taken classes on police training, pschycology etc etc etc. And people are critical because they are ignorant9 i mean that in a nice way). People don't know what officers go through on a day to day basis and they only see negative things in the media. We(citizens) entrust these mere mortals, such as ourselves, witha great deal of power so we in turn do have some high expectations, as we should.

I think they are supportive b/c they are friends but we also have a lot of couples who whether they were a friend of his or mine have a spouse who is also a police officer but I hear things from people I do not know of negative stuff all the time.
It is a hard job but some do think they are above the law and that is wrong, I have always had a problem w/ the case, I forgot the name where they shot someone over forty times and he was holding a wallet, why 40 times??, Diallo, I think And that Grey /drunk driver guy, I felt he should be punished. I did not form an opinion on this case - while it doesnt seem this cop meant to 'murder' someone someone is still dead and I dont think he really should be back on the streets with a gun maybe he should have desk duty or needs more training b/c yes he made a mistake but it was a serious one.

Tammy - That is what I dont understand. Why do people think the check is bigger with the amount of tickets? Some people speak about what they dont know first hand.

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES
I have had a problem with this all of my life!
My dad was a police officer then detective for 20 years, my uncle a sergeant for 20 and my aunt an officer for 15. I have had many problems and even lost a friend or two because they dont understand the lives of a police officer. Many of them talk crap about them and dont understand what they go through on a daily basis which has forced me to go against them.
What gets me is that who are the first people they call when they are in trouble??? It is definately always different when you are affected directly by a police officers job and life. And yes, I have had a hard time with it in my life.
So yes, I have come across a lot of negativity in my life but I wouldnt have it any other way because I am oh so proud to come from a family of cops and I would never change it for all the money in the world! I AM PROUD!

Actually, I saw an article on the net a few weeks ago stating just the opposite. I didn't post it on here for fear of creating somethign ugly, even though I did find it VERY interesting!

Whether you write 1000 tickets or just 10, the pay is the same.

People who don't live the life of a police officer's wife/mother/father/brother/sister/child, etc have no idea what it is like. I come from a family of police officer's and i am marrying one as well and it's one of the hardest things to do is deal with their jobs. my friends are very supportive and totally understand him, his job and what it's all about. It's sickening to hear people tear police officer's apart b/c of a few things that have happened. Never do they get praise for risking their own lives each and every day to save the lives of these very same peole that rip them to shreads.

Good question Cindy.
I grew up the daughter of a copand now I'm the wife of a cop. I have encountered all kinds of people with differing opinions of cops, and this is what I have come away with...
A person who has not lived the life cannot understand it. It's not something that is easily comprehended unless you have 'been there, done that'.
That said, I have to say that our friends are very supportive. When we respond to a wedding or a party saying 'we will be there unless Pat gets stuck at work', people are accommodating. When we cancel plans atthe last minute because of O/T, no one minds (well not too much ). When I'm home alone at night and frightened, I have many friends who's husbands will come over at the drop of a hat to check out a noise and make me feel safe. When the media exploits a situation with a cop and an unfortunately innocent victim, our friends don't pass judgement, and if someone does feel the need to comment, will add 'but there are jerks at every job', letting us know thattheir feelings for the individual do not extend to the entire profession. For this support, I am endlessly grateful.
But do our friends really understand our life? I'd have to say no. No one else but another cop's wife can understand my loneliness. My fear that my son may grow up without his dad. My worry that each kiss goodbye may be the last...
That's something you have to live to know.

I think you need to get your facts straight before you say things like that. First of all, cops don't get salary increases because of the number of tickets they write. Second, for what they go out there and do everyday, putting their lives on the line every day for people like you, believe me, they are not paid nearly enough. You are right that there are a lot of heros in that field, and any time you have been pulled over, you met one!!

very true! and what disgusts me the most is how you cannot have off when you need especially the higher in rank you go, believe it or not rookie cops have better schedules , and weekends off compared to my husband he doesnt know his schedule until the week before! every thurs he finds out his schedule for the next week and it can change at the last minute and he is second in command of a precinct, this frustrates me to no end b/c if I am like can you take off June 4th.... we have a wedding, he is like, Ill try but I cant promise what they will do, its disgusting I get very frustrated from the whole scheduling thing

TRUE TRUE TRUE! Patrick worked in Highway Patrol, and believe me, there was NO pay increase for the # of summonses written!

I agree that a police officer's job is grossly misunderstood, under-gratified, and over-puiblicized when there is conflict. When was the last time one of NY's finest made front page news for more than a week for doing his job well, or for performing an extraordinary act?
My DH cousins (2 of them) are rookies & stories like this scare them bit. It makes it much harder to do your job properly when you are second guessing how it might look to the 'press.'

Very well said. The only other thing I seem to find with some of my friends is that they think it must be very hard to be married to a cop. I don't find that it is hard. I guess that is because I grew up in a cop family.

All I can say is it takes a special type of person to be married to a police officer
