lol, I'm kidding, I normally say russia because I know some of my family is from there but they were from a few different places also but no one knows where so I just say I'm russian

have you ever done the family tree thing, there is a site and seeing what you can find out...well not sure if you're even interested but in case you were.

Is it free? I heard that my great grandma was kind of skanky so we don't know who great grandpa was and my mom keeps trying to get me to order my grandmothers birth certificate so we can see who the daddy's name is. It's like an old school maury povich show.

Puerto Ricans are not all loud, ghetto or from the Bronx.

We all dont carry pepper spray or pocketknife.

We arent illegal immigrants...hello!

LOL true but FH's family is VERY loud - But so is mine!! LOL

Its great that Tilde started this thread tonight, we've been discussing different cultures and their traditions in my Social Work class. We've discussed traditions in birth, child rearing, adolesence, marriage, family, taking care of the elderly and death. We spoke all about death and funeral traditions today and its very interesting to learn what all cultures do during the time of mourning.

Just because you're from queens does not mean you're ghetto. I know somebody who always makes comments like OH NO i dont go into queens, and once about if she had to take the train it would have to be close by to where she was going and not walk too much, yes bc you will get robbed or shot once you step foot into queens...Its not all urban, we do have residential areas and is very suburban like.

its so funny you brought that up..when my lil sister first spoke to FH and learned he was from queens she asked him 'Do you live in the ghetto' followed by 'have you ever been shot?' FH was so amused.

There are bad parts in Queens where this happens , bad parts in Man, BK, BX, SI and good parts as well. But if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time , no matter good or bad place, you never know what a neighorhood can bring

Ancestry.com and genforum.genealogy.com are excellent research sites!! On GenForum, you search your surname, then genforum. For instance, if your last name is Smith, search Smith GenForum. I actually discovered a cousin in Missouri that I didn't know I have!!! Mary MOB

Totally agree..I live in SI and people think its all suburbs and no bad parts. I live on a nice quiet block but if you walk 2-3 blocks your in the projects and one of the worst parts on the island. Its unfortunate that places like Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn have a bad rep because of bad incidents that dont even account for the whole borough.

I beleive this links to Ellis Island. I did this before. Ellis Island is great to see all your family by last name come into the country and at what year

I always thought SI was suburbs, guess Im wrong. I have only been there once in my life and it was the suburbs. I used to hang out in Bayridge BK for years. I have never been to the Bronx

Some info on Ancestry is free like the 1880 Census info, and very often, they give a free three day trial, which I took advantage of, staying up day and night to get family info. During the trial, you can access just about anything! RootsWeb is free, but one needs to be careful because not all entries, posted by people are correct! What happens is one person will post incorrect info, and other people will continue that incorrect chain. I got in touch with a man in one of the New England States, who totally got my personal family line really messed up!! He graciously repaired the damage. However, RootsWeb can be very helpful!! The GenForum site is amazing, because you can ask specific questions and get them answered sometimes by relatives you didn't know you had!! Genealogybank.com is another great site!! Mary MOB

Amen!

I'd also add that not all of us are dark-skinned with big brown eyes. I'm 100% PR and I have very pale skin and green eyes :)
