She will never live a life worth living.
I think this is a dangerous statement.

Re: Terry Schiavo's parents
In terri's case she will NEVER be able to enjoy any of her life...
She will never know what is going on around her she will never know any pleasure or what enjoyment is She will know nothing essentially
If this is true..then why live?
AND Moe is right...not that i think someone should die if they are in one...But MANY of the nursing homes and facilities out there are not a place to be. AND none of you would want to live there permanently ! I of course am not saying to kill all people in nursing homes so for all of you ready to pounce on that...please don't bother But if we are being honest here....nursing homes are no life for anyone!

I still think the whole courts deciding your fate thing is a little scary. Where are they to draw the line? What if they don't think those without limbs should be allowed to live? What if they think everyone who has some sort of disability should go? It's frightening to think that some judge can decide if I live or die.

depends which ones. Dh works with nursing homes and he said there are a few he's visited that are VERY nice and well taken care of. But it's true that it's not the majority that are nice.

You've got that right!
My father has been in the hospital for 6 months at North Shore in Manhasset. At that location, he has been in 4 places. He has been in a regular room, ICU (for three months), Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) and had a 10 day stint in their nursing facility until he was moved back to RCU.
I hope none of you ladies are ever faced with a decision to have to put someone you are about in any type of hospital or nursing facility. But should you ever need to, this place (at North Shore) is #1, top notch. The place is immaculate. The nurses are amazing.thank G-d for each one of them. The therapists and doctors treat him and the family with the utmost respect and dignity. I can't imagine Daddy being anywhere else in his final days. He isn't going to get better, but I know he is comfortable and being well taken care of. That is all anyone can ask.

Just out of curiousity..DO YOU have a health care proxy or a DNR? I bet NOT.
Yes, I have a Health Care Proxy, DNR, & a Will! I do need to update them since I got married but I have them.

Hospitals provide better care then nursing homes IMO...and although there are, i am sure, great nursing homes out there...I FEEL the majority are NOT a place i would put a pet let alone my family member

sharon...that is vastly different. And the reason it was in the courts to begin with is because of her family. It was the right of her husband and it was contested..which led to the courts.
You can't compare someone without limbs to a person who is a vegetable!

i do agree... I would never like the fact that the courts have to step into the situation.
BUT i have to say...i hope people learned from their experience and got health care proxies!

Re: Terry Schiavo's parents
I feel sorry for the parents that they are losing their child, but they honestly think that she is going to get better and recover. The poor woman has no brain activity and cannot respond, talk or do anything that the parents think she is doing. I think the video that you see on TV is misleading, it makes it appear that she is responding to the objects in front of her or to people, when in fact they are nothing more than reflexes. To keep someone like that alive for years IMO is just cruel, and I am sure that she would not have wanted to live that way. I do think its really cruel for the husband to not let her parents give her the burial that she deserves. At that point after she has passed what does he care?
The good that has come out of this is that this will hopefully open up the discussion between couples and families. Put your wishes in writing and let your family know what you want. In New York living wills are not legal, and the courts will not abide by them over the wishes of the family. For instance, if you state that you dont want feeding tubes ect, and your family states that they do, the courts will do what the family says. That is why it is important to let your family know what you want so that they can go by your wishes. Appoint a health care proxy which is someone who can make medical decisions for you in the event that you cant make them for yourself. Pick someone that you know will carry your wishes out, and in some cases, someone other than a spouse or a parent may be a better choice if you think that either one wont do what you want.
