I agree. And, here's an interesting tidbit: in 1991, he started DATING one of Terri's NURSES.
What would have happened if she did make a recovery at that point? Surely within the 1st year of her injury, there was hope for recovery.
how would any of us feel if we woke up 1 year later to find out that our husband did our NURSE?
Honestly, that's why I think he never wanted her to recover and wanted the tube removed. If Terri woke up, she would be the only one who could really say what had happened to her. I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons that Michael wants her silenced indefinitely.

It was a year later. It's has been documented with the court. The nurse testified and he did not dispute it.

I was just reading some of the earlier posts and what you wrote here is again, close to my heart. People of our age generally do not have health care proxies or DNR's but I guarantee they will now. Considering the fact that I will be married within the year, I don't find it necessary to have a DNR or health care proxy as a single woman. If I were not to be married so soon, I most certainly would, especially considering that my mother would be my next of kin. My sister would be named as my health care proxy if I had no marriage plans. Having already lost a child in infancy, and soon to lose her husband, I know in my heart mom would not be able to let go if I needed to be kept alive via machines/tubes of any sort. I couldn't blame her - parents can't let go. But life does go on. It takes a long time to heal, and you never forget, but it goes on. 36 years later and my mother hasn't forgotten the child she lost when he was a baby.
But as a member of a family who has been mourning a person who is still alive for the past 6 months, I can tell anyone it is no way to live. Mom is holding on to someone who will never come home and who will never be who he once was. They are married for 49 years and she is faced with a life alone. Even with Dad alive in the hospital, it gives her purpose to be able to visit him every day.
He already has experienced cardiac arrest and was resuscitated. Had a DNR been signed, he would be gone and at peace. Trust me, he isn't in peace now. He suffers every day. Us kids try to help mom to make a good choice. Even though my sister is Dad's health care proxy (because mom had been in surgery during part of Dad's hospital stay), she will not put pen to paper on a DNR until mom gives the go ahead.
When a man and a woman become husband and wife, they entrust each other with the most serious of plans. Family, home, finance and especially health. Parents will eternally care for their children as they should, but they relinquish their rights when the child says 'I DO'. JMO
Goldi, I couldn't agree more. I'm sorry to hear about your father. My family was almost in a similar situation with my grandmother. For such religious people, I can't understand why her parents are trying to undermine the sanctity of marriage and prolong their daughter's death (which for Catholics, they should be embracing during the Pascal season).
I understand they don't want to let go, but what will happen to her when they die?
I've also read a slew of articles stating that the Schindlers insisted Michael Schiavo live with them after Terri was in the hospital, and then they insisted he date other women and move on so they could have Terri back without him.
There are also many articles about the parents' interest in the malpractice settlement.
There are 2 sides to every story and before the public demonizes and threatens the husband or the parents, they should examine it first.

He was been with 3 women since his wife's injury. (well, 3 that are documented)
The first was one of her nurses in 1991. He was with her for 6 months.
He was with another woman after that. The second woman is the one who testified that he said, 'How the hell am I supposed to know what to do with her? We were young. We never talked about this'
The third is the woman he is with now. She's the one he started dating in 1995 and has 2 kids with.

I don't believe bad things about him.
It's a horrible situation for all involved.
I totally feel for the parents...But I also think the media is trying to make him the bad guy.
He's just a man who was put in a horrible situation. I like to believe that he believes himself to be someone who is truly doing something for the better of the person he once loved.

First, that is not in everyone's wedding vows.
Second, it is not uncommon for people to end up seeking affection while grieving. Sometimes when you are at your lowest in life physical affection (or mindless sex) is the only thing that actually feels normal and happy. The fact that it was her nurse actually doesn't surprise me at all. She was as close to the situation as an 'outsider' could be.
Third, has he been charged with anything? People keep talking about him as a criminal, but I have only seen it mentioned on here and on her site that he might have had something to do with this incident.

I agree with two and three...But your first point--isn't it just understood?

Have you looked at the divorce rate? I think that it is often said, but understanding is different.

Re: Terry Schiavo's parents
My question is how can someone be considered someones legal guardian because you are married, yet be engaged to someone else (and have children with someone else) at the same time.
IMHO it does not matter what we all feel. What bothers me is how everyone is deciding how they feel about someone else's life! It's fine that you don't think someone would want to live. That is the wonderful thing about this wonderful land of ours...we get to choose. That's nice that there are popluations who would not want to live that way...and that is fine. If no one would want to live that way we would not have a need for DNR, healthcare proxies, and living wills. There are many people out there who are not capable to live their lives in a way we would all opt. There are people out there who are in a lot worse condition then this woman. If someone was born this way would you think it is okay to kill them? Or is just because it is aquired that we feel that it is okay. everyone is entitled to their own opinion...make the decisions for yourself though, not for others. I had planned to get a living will right before I got married anyway...that was always the case. I am not jumping down anyone's throat. I respect all of you who have voiced an opinion. The thing is that I have seen everone express if they feel that they feel that this is right or wrong for someone who NONE of us know.
ETA: I don't agree with someof the things he is being accused of. It seems like the result of a family in pain. However, regardless of the wording of their vows...he is currently engaged and can not re-marry until somehow the marriage he has with terri is terminated.
