I use to take the LIRR from Bayside and rarely had problems and never had a major problems. Ever since we moved to LI and I take the train from Garden City it is a common occurence. My train going home has been delayed (by 30 minutes or more) the last two nights and Wednesday it wasn't even snowing yet. And the past two mornings getting in has been delayed as well. It is all extremely frustrating especially since I pay more to travel then before.

In the morning from Bayside I RARELY have problems. However, unfortunately I have problems almost everyday on the way home I take the 659pm home.

Same here, another Bayside rider - I dont have too many problems as a whole, but when I do they are bad and it lasts for a couple of days.

My bosses knows that there is nothing you can do about mass transit. He has been late due to subway delays, he knows the story.

Can I ask a question- I don't know because I never had to commute by train, but what do your bosses say when you are late and it is due to the trains and they know that it is due to the trains? Do they care? Do you have to make up the time?

It seems to me, I constantly hear people complaining about LIRR and LIRR doesn't listen. But I bet they would listen to big industry getting mad!! Or have your bosses just given up too?

My boss commutes by train also (from NJ) and is generally understanding in extenuating circumstances. For instance, it took him 3 hours to get to work yesterday instead of the usual hour and a half.

In gerenal, the owners are understanding because you can tell when there are real problems on the train since a lot of people will be late. This goes for the subways also. But if it's chronic lateness, then they will say something.

Depending on how late I am and what I need to get done during the day will determine if I stay late to make up the time. I generally don't take a lunch hour and rarely leave at 5 on the dot, so if I am a little late, I don't sweat it. But I am also salaried, so I wouldn't get charged for it.

But our hourly employees are responsible for making up the time.

Christine: I was on the 659 last night and I heard the conductor ask the engineer to switch to the infamous 'line 4'. I thought GREAT ANOTHER FREAKIN DELAY I also think they cancelled the 642pm train b/c the 659 was PACKED.

As for the bosses, they don't care, since it's nothing they can do. They don't make me make up the time. But if I have work to do, I'll stay late.
And like I said I rarely have problems in the morning, so it's not like I call in late every morning.

My boss completely understands and I dont have to make up the time unless I have a ton to get done!

Clueless-I had determined before I even made it here today that there would be delays tongith and I am leaving early too!!

There is only so much you can take!

I was on the 5.29 that was delayed for brake problems so I went for the 5.50 which by then was cancelled and combined with the 5.56.

So I was going to wait out the 5.29 but then they took it out of service. They made the 5.44 a local train. I had to stand and literally could not move my arms until after the broadway stop bcause it was so crowded.

The LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule today. The LIRR is currently operating with 20-to-30 minute delays systemwide as a result of weather-related equipment problems. The Babylon Branch is experiencing 40-to-50 minute delays due to a broken rail.

That's awful. Thankfully I had a seat on the train but there were people standing in the aisles. And no one really got off until Aurburndale

I was on a 'new' train this morning and even though it is better insulated, I hate the way it sways back and forth and you knock into the person next to you.

When will they get it right?

I too was 2 hours late this morning. I was on an 8 o'clock train which was running 14 minutes late but I said ok I'll still make it to work on time.

Well I got stuck at Jamaica and then again at Woodside. They said there was a 'disabled' train ahead of us and we had to reverse east to go back to Penn Station. All in all I didn't make it in until 10:30!!! This is the 2ND DAY IN A ROW I'M LATE!!!

Re: The January 16, I hate LIRR thread!

I think a big reason why the Bayside train is rarely delayed (except the last few days) is because the Pt. Washington line does not go through Jamaica. Whenever you go through Jamaica, especially if you have to transfer everything gets all swrewed up. Last week my train was delayed leaving Penn Station and I had to switch at Jamaica, but since we were delayed at Jamaica the Hempstead train did not wait so I was at Jamaica for about 50 minutes until another Hempstead train FINALLY came.

Im glad we drove in this morning!!

BTW,...if lateness ever becomes a problem with your boss, the LIRR will write you a 'late' note!!! I know if sounds funny, but to risk losing your job over public transportation is dumb!!

I think they still write the notes...they used to years ago!! When the train service was crappier...can you imagine it being any worse???

My train was about 10mins late. Thank god Jim waits until the train arrives, so I sit in my car all nice and warm. I always try to sit towards the center of the train to avoid the chill from the doors. I also try to catch trains that are express so the doors don’t open that many times.

I got to Penn about 15mins late but the E was stranded somewhere. There was yellow tape blocking access. Then an announcer says the E is running on the express track. We all under and over to the A tracks and an E arrives…..
ON THE LOCAL TRACK!!!
Finally I catch a C (my alternate route) trying to get to 50th.
At 42nd the guy says “Next stop 59th” What about 50th, try the next train they say. So I get off and wait. Next train comes and they say they are stopping at 50th. We get on and look 50th is coming up.. and there it goes.. no stopping. Everyone starts to yell at the man in the controls “You said we’d stop” poor guy.. “they told me we would!” Got to 59th and had to take a D train to Rockefeller.

I arrived with 3 minutes to spare. LOVE this commute!
Traveling NYC in bad weather is so much FUN!

Oh.
My boss is in hungtington.. her train stops at my stop on it's way to Penn. If Im late due to train problems I usually have no problem cause then she is late too. If I don't take that line (I have a choice of two) then still, being from Long Island she never argues.

Im never late much anyway though. I always assume the worse and take earlier trains. Even in good weather my train gets me to work with a half hour to spare just in case something happens. Bad weather I take even an earlier train.

hey swags, i know the LIRR does, in fact, listen to the commuter complaints. FH works as a conductor for LIRR so i get the inside scoop. i guess you noticed that it was a little cold this am, well trains have problems just like cars have problems in this weather. its not so easy to make every single LIRR rider happy. what would you have them do to make it better?
