I would just like to say that LIRR is ridiclious!! It took me 2 HOURS to get to work today...it usually takes me 1 HOUR!!!
I am sure others had problems as that is all I was hearing from people today!!
Thank goodness its friday!!

Re: The January 16, I hate LIRR thread!
i'm glad we have an inside communicator to the lirr, smm2675.
Firstly- their COMMUNICATION is horrendous. i know it's not the guys behind the scene fault for mechanic problems due to the weather. I'd rather be late and get there safe.
BUT- listening to the radio with all the delays and closures - you always hear 'lirr on or close.' Never, cancellations on whatever branch or 25-60 minute delays. It's ridiculous. People standing in below freezing temperatures not knowing if a train is going to come, be cancelled, how long the wait. There's a computerized sign at Ronkonkoma for 2 months now has flashed 'sign not in service.'
Come on now

i hear what you are saying, but you haven't answered the question. what would you do if you were president of the LIRR? if the weathers bad, you cannot control the way the trains run; and if there are delays, there is not much that can be done about it. and there communication is not horrendous. all the people that need to know the situation, know the story. if you don't blame the mechanics, you certinaly cannot blame the conductors, they don't drive the train.
give me a break

Obviously NOT all the 'people who need to know know the story' since they are people in below freezing temps waiting for the train not knowing what's going on. Why should we have to pay so much money for this sh!tty service like that. I understand that your FH/DH is a conductor for the LIRR, but we were just venting in general, not at a specific conductor or conductors for that matter. No need to get so defensive.

Re: The January 16, I hate LIRR thread!
Personally, I have found that I have had crappier service when the weather was perfectly fine and I could never understand it.
One clear and nice morning someone missed the switch to Penn and we ended up going to Hunter's Point, had to do a reverse move and get back on the right track and the go into Penn. We wasted a half hour getting back on track because someone wasn't paying attention. That wasn't weather related. Can someone explain that????

i'm not taking it as a personal attack aganist my fh; however, since he's worked for them i've learned to see it from a differnt point of view. i'm just trying to get someone else to see it that way. think whatever you want, but don't complain about the fares or the service, unless you have a solution to the problem. until then, happy commuting!!!

Re: The January 16, I hate LIRR thread!
One thing I request from the LIRR is honesty. When I am sitting in front of the little conductor's booth and the door is open and I hear LIRR employees arguing on channel 4 about a mistake one person made and then five minutes later they broadcast a message 'due to equipment trouble' or 'we apologize for the unavoidable delay' I get annoyed.
How about 'sorry, someone goofed'? Don't lie to me and tell me that someone's negligence was unavoidable. I wouldn't do it in my job, they shouldn't do it in theirs.

i understand what you are saying, i feel the same way when it comes to my own job. but do you understand what i'm saying, they can't just say 'oops, somebody goofed' b/c that would get you even more annoyed. then the argument would become, 'if he can't do this job, find sombody who will', theres more to it then you think there is. just like with our jobs, we complain about stupid sh!t that happens, about $$ or hours or whatever, and we think that there should be an easy fix. just try to see it from the LIRR's point of view.
