Thinking of cancelling my reception...need hugs (sorry...long)

Original post by tiggsnme

I'm thinking of cancelling my reception...still going ahead with the ceremony because I love my FH to death. BUT....I'm running at about 42% no's and there is no way that I can make my room minimum. My parents are paying for the reception and want to go ahead with it, but I just can't justify them wasting all of their money on this. I just feel aweful. I know that part of the problem is that my FH is from CT and I've lived and worked in CT for 10 years, so it's hard for people to come to LI for a wedding. I also work with a lot of doctors and a lot of my colleagues couldn't be bothered to take a trip to NY just to celebrate with me. I feel so hurt that so many of the people who trained me in my residency and who I have worked with for years don't have enough respect to come.
Even my bridal shower was a disaster....out of 50 people invited, only about 10 showed up...not even my own godmother came. I feel so bad that my parents paid money for that (they had it at Milleridge). I would rather have not had one than make my wonderful parents pay for such a bad thing...and I know they feel terrible for me that no one came.
I just don't know what to do. I want to cancel the reception so my parents don't loose so much money, but they and my FH are insistent that we go through with it.

Is anyone interested in CLM for 9/29/07?

Sorry, I just needed some support and you girls have been great!

I wouldn't cancel honestly. 80 is alot of people that responded yes. And if your FH wants the reception and you don't have it, he might regret it...you don't want any feelings like that or of regret when you look back and think about your wedding. The important part is that you and FH are happy, and I'm sure your parents are really looking forward to having the reception for you too. It can still be the day of your dreams.

Gosh.... I'm soooo sorry!!! Here are some hugs!!!
You're definitely on the right step...announce on here but also maybe put up an ad for the date. See when the next bridal show will be and offer your date to any of the brides there. I too would cancel especially since in addition to those that said they won't make it, you'll have another 5-10% that won't make it to the wedding the day of, that RSVP 'yes'.....So, If you MUST cancel what will you do instead, given all the money you have already invested in this wedding?

80 is not a bad number of guests for a wedding. At my eparty out of the 180 people we invited only about 100 showed. Alot of FH family couldnt make it since they lived out of town. The room we had it in was huge since we used the fire depts ball room . I think it seats like 500 people. I think before you cancel you should just talk to the hall about what they can do for you, and about how much you will still have to pay them. If your going to have to pay full price, or close to full price you should still have have it. Ask your parents and FH if there is anyone they want to invite. And if they dont have that many people tell everyone that didnt get a 'and guest' invite that they can bring people.

don't cancel your wedding...remember its about you and your FH...i know exactly how you fell, my shower was on saturday and only about 10 ppl came (but i had so much fun anyway). We're expecting about 105 for the wedding but who knows.....Have your reception and dance all night long, and celebrate with those friends and family that came out to show their love and support for your and your FH...

Just a suggestion - can you invite people you and your FH and parents work with??? like bosses or co-workers... that may help??

I'm sorry you're hurting...
