Legally he is entitled to it back. AN engagement ring is a gift in contemplation of marriage and no matter who breaks it off if the wedding is cancelled he is legally entitled to the ring.

On a personal note, I would definitely give it back. I wouldn't want something that everytime I looked at it it reminded me of him.

Isn't that only if she breaks off the wedding? If he breaks it off, he's not entitled to it since it was a gift.

I say you should sell it.

Nope doesn't matter if he broke it off he is still entitled to it back. Do you think he would try to get it back? If so I wouldn't do anything with it for now because if you sell it and he sues you for it you will have to pay him.

Also, whose names were the contracts in. If they were just in yours (like the RH, band, etc) then unfortunately he isn't liable for any of the lost money. THis is why I made FH sign EVERY contract also

What a load of cr*p! If a guy breaks it off I think the chick should be entitled to it!

I agree !

If you keep it will you feel bad every time you look at it?

Yeah everytime I come across it , it gives me the creaps

He broke it off, I wouldn't give it back. Sell it and send yourself on a nice vacation and buy yourself something pretty at Tiffany's.

Sounds good!!!!!!!!

I think of that Sex and the City episode where Charlotte gives it to Carrie for her apartment.
May not be the same situation, but maybe you cant turn it into some good, so hold onto it.

OH ya....that's good....i'm so sorry you have to deal with it. give it some time, but i definitely wouldn't give him the satisfaction of getting it back and selling it...if anything throw it in the ocean, or maybe there is someplace it can be donated...or sell it and give the money to charity? no matter what don't let him get anything out of it....

I don't know what would be appropriate etiquette in your situation, you're the only one who would know best...BUT...if you do keep it, my advice would be to sell it and invest! This way you don't really have anything to remind you of him, and you make some extra $$ off it!

I'll invest it in a stock called ASSHOLLEE and make millions

Although you are really upset, either give it back or sell it. You dont want to look at it and be reminded of anything. It will be more painful in the long run.
Besides if you two get back together (you just never know) you would want a new fresh start anyway.

i mean REALLY... really... if you paid for EVERYTHING... even if it was ur family.. adn not his name on anything... and the ring was a pretty penny and u lost $$ in the cancellation... U ONLY deserve his amt.

edit.... even if the rig was 5 bucks... u still are entitled to that 5 dollars.

Dont know how much but to me its worthless!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did he (or you) get it appraised? Do you have an idea of how much you could probably get for it?

as long as you legally dont have to give it back to him than i would either keep or it sell it (most likely i would sell it)

do you think he is going to try and get the ring back from you? if so, i wouldnt do anything with it yet just to be on the safe side......i have heard of guys suing to get an engagement ring back......i dont know the legal side of it though.....depending on the situatuon sometimes you have to give it back.......which i think stinks!!!!

Tiki-do you think he'll take you to the court. Alot of ppl dont end up doing this bc it would cost him money to hire a lawyer and the whole process of it, sometimes it costs just as much for all these fees, as you would win in a settlement so they dont do it...i know a guy who is in this situation and they were actually married already and she is the one who one day just left but still kept the ring. And if he even tries, which i dont think he even will, then tell him you will take him to court for all the wedding expenses

I dont know but If I recall correctly he told me he doesnt want it back. I paid for everything so I deserve to sell it and get my money back.

oh ok great, then that answers your question. SELL IT, go on vacation or do something for yourself

Personally i would sell it and use the money to take a nice trip with your girlfriends. Thats what i did with my engagement/wedding ring from my first marriage after my divorce.

I had a fun trip and realized how much happier in the end i was.

Good luck!

Yea I agree the law is totally unfair but if he doesn't want it back then you don't have any problems!

I don't know what I'd call him...but at this point if he wasn't helping with the expenses during the planning, I doubt he'll do so now, which is why she should keep it. IMHO

Re: What should I do with the ring???

I am actually in the process of helping my friend sell her E-ring...he broke it off, and he told her to keep it, and sell it.
So she is going to use the money how she wants.

I called 2 stores, and we are going to one today to see what they will offer her. She knows what he paid, and she wont take less than a certain amount

You should sell it!
