Where do you plan on living?

Where do you plan on living?

I know it's none of my business what people spend their money on, but I see on here that people are saying they'd rather put money towards their wedding then towards a house. I was curious where people plan on living after you get married?

FH and I bought a townhouse and it's great to know once we say 'i do' that we get to start our life together in our own home.

Obviously it's everyones own business I was just curious....

Fh's parents have a newly redone apartment upstairs in their house...with a seperate enterance and deck which is pretty nice and big and soo much closet space i love it. and the rooms are an awesome size as well

they are letting us live there for free actually since it will help us save for a house. they think we will be there for awhile...NOT HAPPENING

we plan to move out a year or two after the wedding if we can afford a house.

but right now i am thankful that is what we will have

Well, once the work is done on the house fh bought last year, we'll be moving in together! It's in Lindenhurst and should be done before the wedding. We feel the same way as you. Its nice knowing that we'll have a house ready for after we say our I do's

Re: Where do you plan on living?

we just got a new apartment at the Avalon in Glen Cove.... we had been actively looking at house but decided the market was too unstable. Houses we liked were being pulled off the market...people think they are going to get asking price which is INSANE, especially with this market. We will still continue looking while we are in the apartment, FH needed to move so we figured we would get something together.

we are finishing up the process of buying a new condo in massapequa and should move in a few months prior to the wedding. it will be nice to start our lives there as newlyweds

we live together in an apt. we're staying here til after the wedding and are going to re-discuss our plans again after.

we'll have a few months after to decide if we want to renew the lease or not. we'll probably be in the apt a yr or 2 after the wedding while we look for a house.

we have a condo now, and after we get married we are putting it on the market and will be looking for a house.

Sounds like some nice places. I think having your own space is very importnat when entering 'newlywedom' (if that's a word)

We don't own our apt, but after living together for the past 3 years, we've definitely made it 'our own home'.

Re: Where do you plan on living?

i am actually currently looking at condos in kew gardens and forest hills. We're open to other areas but both of us want to look here first. We saw a few we really liked and want to go look soon

the fact that we want to stay in the kew gardens/forest hills area, even astoria or maybe bayside, we want to do a condo for now...houses in these areas are on average about $600k and higher, its hard to find them even in the $400k-500k range and if you do many times they're either very small or something is wrong with the house. Most of the houses are even in the $700k-900k and then even higher. I said this in the other thread but i dont want to pay $3k-5k every month on my mortgage right now.

I did JUST find one house in kew gardens for $450k and its listed as a hot property bc of its price and seems to be decent but i would have to check it out to see why its selling for that price.

When we start planning to have kids then we'll probably start looking for houses but i am 100% fine living in a condo

i completely agree that is why i am so hesitant to move into the apt above my future in laws....i mean it is free and it is a huge nice apt i am just nervous it is going to cause some trouble living in their house...meaning they are going to be bothering us when we do want to have our privacy...i guess we will see how it works out but i kinda wish fh would fold and decide on just renting an apt of our own. but he said he doest want to put money into something that he doesnt own

We are living in my co-op.
Looking at houses but want to actually
make offers 3-5 months after wedding.
We found our *dream* home and hopefully it
will be available then.

I agree with you completely, i would be nervous also. I think sometimes FIL's don't mean it and think they are helping but it becomes intrusive. I hope that doesn't happen to you!

it will be even less after the wedding so that is a great idea

QUESTION for the ladies who bought houses or condos/co-op's recently, what interest did you get it at? Ive done the mortgage calculator for places im interested in and even going down 1% makes a difference so i wanna see what its at now

I got it in 2004 at 5.2

eta: you should get pre-approved. Now its in the high fives

Re: Where do you plan on living?

Well alot depends on your credit score and such. So even if it's at a certain percentage that doesn't mean you can get it. If you are seriously interested you are supposed to go get pre approved for a mortgaget (which doesn't cost anything) and you can find out the rates you can get.

on these sites when it calculates the mortgage for you, all of them automatically put 6%, when i put in 5% or if i put a little over 5% it makes a difference that would even make me consider a place i hadn't...i just checked now and as of now the apr in ny is about 5.34% so thats great.

I am excited bc FH just called and said we should see the apartment we both like tomorrow
