I agree with other posters who say this is a hard question to answer - without sounding self-absorbed.

I have no problem with self-absorbtion in this area. you SHOULD be self-absorbed when making this decision, IMHO.

I agree with your statement however, I said it is hard to answer without 'sounding' self absorbed, not BEING self absorbed. There have been countless times when I have heard people say ' I want a little piece of me' in this world when they mean something on a much bigger scale which of course, is fine. It is simply difficult to put into simple terms.

ETA: Kara articulated my thought in her post better than I did. Thank you!

I understand...especially in a larger circle (like LIF) but here, I'd like you to be as verbally free as you want to be.

and Leslie, I am pulling for you guys. I really am.

Thanks. It is greatly appreciated from each and every one of you.

I am generally conservative with how I present my opinions. Perhaps I need a case of DOM - Diarrhea of the Mouth to come out of my proverbial shell.

I have a couple of cases on reserve. If you are ever in Tex-a$$, give me a ring.

I have MANY relatives in Dallas and I LOVE Texas. Besides, Dallas' best surgeons put my Mom back together - rods, screws and all - just in time for the nuptials.

ME TOO! I have NEVER posted anything like what I posted above because I have been too scared to post anything so 'controversial' but I totally respect you and I like your posts!

(and I am wishing heaps of baby dust on you!)

i love this post. i love reading all these different views.

never really thought about it - but here is what i came up with - its kind of selfish too in a way . . .

i have been with FH for nine years now. . .we will probably be together for for about 12 or 13 when we have kids. Just the idea that I can MAKE something that is truly. . . part of him and part of me - joined together and forming a human being. . . is just amazing, wonderful and beautiful -like a gift that we are giving each other.

wow i should print this out when my kids become teenagers and i want to send them away somewhere. . . .

I don't think not wanting children is selfish at all.

Actually wanting children to 'have a piece of you' on Earth could be considered selfish

Re: Why do people want to have children?

I used to say I wanted 12 kids - or 8 or whatever. A lot. But I had no reason outside of a desire to name something and have it be mine. Seriously.

I was a teenager at the time. Epitome of selfishness.

I didn't really think about kids too much as I grew into my 20's. Didn't think about having them or not having them. Thought a lot about what kind of clothes I was going to wear out and where my next vacation should be. Still selfish.

Met a guy - fell in love had lots of sex. He called children money sucking screamboxes and said he didn't want them. I deferred and went on the pill and then... got pregnant anyway. ***?

Deciding to have the baby was a weird one. I honestly had no idea what to do. I told him - expecting him to demand an abortion and trying to steel myself for this 'rejection'. And he said we should have the baby.

I think I actually did pass out at that point.

I guess I never made the decision - but ultimately it made me. Twice actually - since baby number 2 was also a surprise!

It made me a better person - more patient, more forgiving, less self absorbed. I am not saying that people who DO NOT have or do not choose to have kids are short fused, selfish bitches (unless they are ). I am saying that ultimately having children was right for me. I am better for it. And I use the good that I have discovered in myself to help create what I pray will be 2 really good men.

Now the selfish part.

I want another one. Because I love having kids. Because they are so much fun and they keep me young. Because NOBODY else will go outside in the pouring rain with me and just get SOAKED or roll around in the muddy garden. Because nobody else asks me the questions they ask me and I love it. I love being a mother more than I have ever loved anything else in the whole world. I love that there is still someone in the world who likes to play Chutes and Ladders. I love singing to my babies and letting them tackle me. I love having picnics with them and watching them hunt bugs. I love making odd shaped blob pancakes and seeing what they think I meant to make. I love taking bike rides with them and seeing everything new from their perspective. I love the way they smell after they have been racing around in the cold afternoon air. I love when they sleep sprawled in a puppy pile in only ONE of the bunk beds becuase they love being together. I love when they wake me up by staring at me while I am in bed. I love getting them ready for school and ... I love it all! Because it matters - everything I do as a mom matters to someone. Because it would be nice to PLAN for a baby for once - not just be all 'OH SH*T!'

And because I would like to see if I can have a girl because I really am tired of being SO COMPLETELY OUTNUMBERED BY PENISES IN MY OWN HOUSE!

(the last bit was a joke..)

I just want to say:

For those who want to have [more] children, I wish you all the best and hope that you have/continue to build upon the family that you dream of.

For those who are PG or TTC, please know that I'm pulling for you and support you 5000%.

For those who don't want children at all, your honesty is refreshing - thank you for making me feel less 'alone'.
