Words

I was talking to my friend last night and she kept using the word 'Mortified' as she always does, but she was using it in the wrong context. She's been doing this for years, so it's pointless to say anything to her about it at this point.

But it got me thinking - what other words are there that people contantly use incorrectly on a regular basis?

Re: Words

my brother uses 'persay' all the time and I'm always correcting him when he uses it wrong. It cracks the both of us up - he doesn't even know he's doing it.

I can't think of any words off the top of my head, but I had a friend that would use words in the wrong context on purpose. It drove everybody nuts!

I don't like when people say 'myself' instead of 'me'. 'Myself' seems to be an overused word lately...

I hate when people say 'conversate' instead of 'converse,' and ask if I've become more 'domesticated,' instead of 'domestic!' I'm not a dog, for cripe's sake!

Oh - I also hate when people make up words to make themselves sound smarter.....at school I had a parent once ask if we could 'conversate'

The word existential. I have a friend who just throws this word around and has no idea of the meaning.

Edited for typo.

I've been hearing 'agreeance' (sp?) too often. What happened to agreement?

That makes me crazy!

There's a counselor at my school who tells the teachers that the students need to be 'routinized'. As far as I know, there is no such word and it irks me that an educated person uses it. Especially one who works with kids who need to hear good grammar at school, because they usually don't hear it at home.

DH's aunt asked me if I became more domesticated over the last year while we were eating dinner the other night. It took everything I had to answer her with a straight face!

How about 'orientated'? Is it 'oriented'???? As in family oriented.
