Would you ever up-grade your e-ring?

Original post by mark'smama

I am listening to Z100 and they are talking about weather it is wrong or not to 'up-grade' your e-ring.

I say that I would never change what my sweetie gave me. It means too much to me already.

Re: Would you ever up-grade your e-ring?

I thought about it for the first year we were engaged. I picked my ring out and purposely picked one that would not break JT's bank (good quality, but only a carat), and so I just figured I would always upgrade. But as time goes on, and the option of upgrading is actually available to me now, I never would. Who cares what the ring looks like (mind you, I LOVE what my ring looks like, but I'm talking size here), it's what JT gave to me. It's just a symbol of something so much bigger and greater than that.

No way -- I love my e-ring -- it's big, beautiful and I couldn't ask for a more perfect ring!!

NEVER, it's the one my DH chose for me. It's perfect.

My sentiments exactly! FI told me that in the future, i can get a bigger stone and better quality. I refuse because this is the ring he proposed to me with. I love it!!

Never! This one is upgraded enough for me! But I would buy some new stuff. I told my FH last night after going to the diamond district in LA, that I will be giving him plenty of visual suggestions when we go pick up my ring

I love mine but I would still never change it. Another ring would never have the same meaning to me.

FH told me I could exchange if I wanted something diff, yet I love the one he gave me because he picked it out all by himself. I dont think size matters, definitely dont want him going broke over a ring, I would never in a million years think to upgrade.

Re: Would you ever up-grade your e-ring?

I've thought about this and discussed it w/ FH a lot, and it's the reason I don't HAVE an e-ring yet. FH is waiting until he can pick out what he feels is 'perfect' for a LIFETIME, not a few years.

My mother wore a gorgeous .5ct marquis for 20 years. The color wasn't the best, but it was the ring my dad put on her hand when they were 20 years old, had no money, but needed each other.

Just before their 20th anniversary, Mom dragged Dad down to the family jewelers to pick out an anniversary gift. Dad thought he'd buy her a necklace or something, and he was pretty shocked when she told the jeweler she wanted to look at diamonds for a new e-ring.

She ended up with a 1.15ct D color, internally flawless round brilliant set in gold with invisibly set princess stones all down the shoulders. Very pretty, but not my taste.

She stopped wearing the original e-ring, and I know it really upset my father. For christmas that year, he had her original diamond bezel set in a necklace, so now she can wear BOTH diamonds! (sorry, pic is lousy. I blew up a small one.)

only in NYC is one carat considered small.

I have 1 carat too and I wouldn't upgrade.. because as we are married there are much more important things to spend money on- children's college fund, etc.

NO WAY!!! My ring was custom designed by FH...He put a lot of time & effort into it...If I had to pick one out for myself, I could not do as well as he did...Plus the ring has so much meaning behind it...

I would but only because my FH was given the ring by his grandfather(it was his grandmothers) so I wouldn't feel bad but I might only get the pieces that you can slide around it...

For our 5th anniversary we are planning on updating my ring. I picked it out myself, but I know after a few years I will want to change it.

The first ring is my current one. The second ring will be my upgrade.

NEVER! This is the ring he researched for weeks. This is the ring he put on my finger. I remember opening the box and being amazed. I remember the look on is face when he asked me to marry him. I remember waking up the next morning and looking at my hand and thinking I'm Engaged!! I remember looking at it in the sunlight for the first time.

It's not what I picked out, but it's perfect! It's meant to be a symbol of our relationship--I wouldn't trade my DH in, why would I trade in my ring? JMO.....

also wanted to add that my best friend went with her FH to pick out the ring- they went with a .66ct round solitaire, but purchased an 'upgrade plan' - in 10 years, they get what they paid for the diamond PLUS 15% to put towards a larger one.

I, PERSONALLY, do not think that one carat is a small ring, but in my original thinking, I thought I wanted something bigger. Trust me, I would never pass judgement on the size of anyone's anything, especially their ring!

NEVER! Mostly because it's my Mom's diamond and I picked out my setting...so it's exactly what I want.

NO WAY!!!
My FH asked me what i wanted...he let me pick the stone out, and the setting....
and i just had to wait for the day when he was going to ask...
Its way to different...and we went crazy lookin for just the right heart shaped cut diamond!!

Re: Would you ever up-grade your e-ring?

Nope. FI took 2.5 months to learn all about diamonds and met with all his jeweler friends, my jeweler friends and recommended jewelers. After all the effort that he put in to find a great stone, no way I'm changing it.

I would consider upgrading the setting to one with diamonds or maybe getting an eternity band though.
