Re: Is it just me or are weddings ridiculously over-priced on everything??
The amount of money you put on a wedding you can really use for a home... We went to one place to look at our wedding being there they were $185 per person then 20% plus tax. We were shocked then the place tried to convince us to have a Thursday summer wedding telling us it is the new manhattan. Then a week later called me and insulted me telling me that if i have my wedding with them i would be having a mercedes wedding anywhere else i would have a piece of sh$t Kia. do you believe that. We would never recommend that place.

My mom told me that when she got married at Leonard's about 26 yrs ago they paid almost $25 a person for a Sat. night and they had everything.
Even better, when my parents got married 40 years ago it was $15 and that was considered expensive!

Hence the reason I am getting married on a Sunday afternoon. The price difference between a Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon is enormous, and there was no way I was spending over 25 grand on my hall. My whole reception, for 135 people, and 4 vendors for next Sunday with an officiant, the ceremony, and tax and grat, is $13,856.00.
You did it the smart way!!! I all but begged my FH to have it in the daytime, but he insisted on an evening wedding. Now that he sees how much everything is costing, he gets so mad. He was talking to his bro about it the other day, and his brother was even getting mad about it!!!

I honestly 100% agree with you! it is utter BS that they up the prices over 100X what they would usually cost. When was the last time you ate a dinner that cost 85-200 bucks??? and yet you have to not just pay for yours but anywere from 50-500 people? I think it is NUTS! And ladies this won't change if we keep paying theses crazy prices! I remember talking to one vender who quoted $200 a plate. I looked at him and asked if there was a gold nught worth $190 in the middle because i shop at sams club and I haven't found a chicken any where near that price!

Re: Is it just me or are weddings ridiculously over-priced on everything??
It is insane. We're having a hard time staying under $25,000. Which is still better than my brother who shelled out $30,000 2 years ago. And I'm sorry but for anything higher than $200pp I should be able to see gold plated toilet tissue to wipe with.
It is insane that the minute anything has the word 'wedding' or 'bridal' attached to it, the price is marked up by 200%.
What's even worse is that they have you by the cojones because everything has to be paid in full in cash from the month before up to the day of the wedding.
Now I don't wonder why my parents got married in my grandmother's basement!!!

Re: Is it just me or are weddings ridiculously over-priced on everything??
It is crazy out there, but FH and I still found some range... there were the 200, even the 300/plate places, and there were the 100/plate and much less places. Keep looking - there's (relatively) more affordable stuff out there, especially if you're flexible about the time of year, or the day, or both - sundays are much cheaper and you can probably do a sunday evening if you want a nighttime wedding if you pick a holiday weekend. This is not to say weddings aren't crazy expensive out here - they are (my brother's getting married in Chicago next month - I'd guess they're spending about 10K - amazing how low that can sound now!!!), but there is less crazy. Good luck!

I agree that everything is overpriced. You have to find ways to cut corners. I'm getting married on a Sunday afternoon at Giorgio's which made it affordable for me - I could never afford Giorgio's on a Sat. nite. I'm going with a DJ only, not a band. There are gorgeous dresses in the affordable price range, just don't fall in love with the $4,000 designer gown. Just have to do the best you can within your budget.

Re: Is it just me or are weddings ridiculously over-priced on everything??
We got a great deal at the Crest Hollow, but that's also because we gauranteed 300 people. We will be way above our gaurantee. But I agree... Weddings are so expensive. I've been having many money related meltdowns over the past few weeks. We are fortunate that our families are paying for the wedding, we will put in anything that goes over budget (and of course we ARE over budget!). But I have to say, that at times over the past few weeks, I feel that it's selfish of me to have all this money spent on me for one day. FH is great and keeps telling me, that I deserve to have this day and to let our parents do this for us.

I know what you mean! The minute the word 'wedding' comes out of your mouth it seems like the cost goes up 30%!

Re: Is it just me or are weddings ridiculously over-priced on everything??
Yes, weddings are ridiculously expensive on LI and NYC, but if you compare them to what the rest of the country is 'used to' there's really no comparison. Whether you pay $50 per person or $300 per person in OUR area, you are getting your money's worth IMO. I've been to a good # of weddings outside the metro area and can't even begin to tell you that its practically day and night--my friends who paid about 1/4 of what I did, didn't have the kind of facilities I did, didn't have the excellent service and didn't have the REALLY excellent food that we did. There was nothing 'wrong' with their weddings....but I truly feel our money was well spent.

You know I'm seriously considering saying that it's not a wedding, but an e-party and then all of a sudden change it to a wedding...I would really, really love to test this out, but I'd be afraid it backfire....The word 'wedding' just jacks up the price tremendously.
I wonder what would happen if someone did this...
GIRLS..we gotta be twice and smarter/quicker than them and play them at there own game.

And I just read in Cosmo that the average American wedding is $26,000.... ha! Not on LI!
our wedding is well below this amount, but only because we're having 60 people at ours.
Ditto. We had 45 and our wedding was $20,000. But that also included an 8 night Sandals Honeymoon.
