What do you think the average couple is spending on their first house? Do you expect your first house to be your dream house or a starter?
Just curious....

Re: Your first house...
thats a tough one. LI prices are so much.
For us we sort of want to look for a house we are going to stay in for a while
FH plans are starting a private practice once we have our own house so we really need a house that we plan on staying in for a while

Re: Your first house...
our current house will not be where we end up. we would love to sell our house right now, but there are too many houses for sale in our area.
but we'll definitely move. FH grew up in this house but he's cool with moving - we want something that we pick together. but we're happy here for as long as we'll need to be here

i would love to only live in one house
my parents have lived in my house since they came to America in 1967
FH STILL gets upset when he passes his old house - i could never imagine moving and letting someone else live in my home!!

Same here. I hope our first house is our dream house. We're really saving for something we can live in forever!

its very hard when we moved from Staten Island to Long Island my parents built our house on land that was attached to my grandfathers house. We moved about 7 years ago and its still hard. My parents helped design it and we were the only ones living there.. now I see it when i visit my grandma and the people destroyed it. I think they forclosed and its vacant. vines are growing up it and the windows are borded up its just gross. even the lawn is nasty and that and the garden were my moms pride and joy
I just took a pic of it the other day.. this is it.. it looks terrible!! and you should see the backyard

I think the house we buy after the wedding is the house we will be in for a while. The area that we want we can get a nice house for around $400,000 and I get sick just thinking about it, but what else can ya do if you want to live on the island ya know?

Re: Your first house...
yeah the people that live in FH's house STILL HAVE HIS MOTHER'S CURTAINS UP!!!
TWELVE YEARS LATER
and they have up the basketball hoop that FFIL put up and stuff. . . i cried the first time he took me to his house - it was like a big deal in the beginning of our relationship when he first learned to drive. . . and it was so sad to see him talk about it

Re: Your first house...
we spent 415 and are putting more into fixing it up so we can flip it. it was an old house but in great condition so it just needs upgrades. we're redoing bathrooms and kitchen and a few other things here n there. but we went in on this house with FH's best friend/ best man...so we'll sell within a yr after the wedding to get our own.
I am hoping we don't spend more than this on our first house. here's a pic...its deff not my dream house but I could see myself living here for many years if we fixed it up...but thats not the plan so i try not to get attached. its in north baldwin just a block and a half away from Rockville ctr
ETA: those fugly awnings and the three back bushes were the first things to go when we moved in lol

$400,000 is really what you're gonna spend if you want something that's nice ya know. it's so expensive to live here. it's really hard for young couples starting out. i lucked out that FH already had a house - but the bills add up it's hard

At this rate, I don't think we will ever be able to afford a house.

We're in a house now, but we don't own it 100%-- we own part of it as it was in FH's family and in need of a major remodel. We paid for all of the renovations and it's like new- but in a few years we'll buy our own house. I just see people all the time who buy a house saying they're going to flip it and then end up staying there forever!!! I can see getting confortable and not wanting to do it over again though!!
Another one.... how much of a down payment do you think you'll have? my FBIL just bought a house with almost NOTHING down!!

I said the same thing to FH- but he said then we need to have closer to like 40% in our savings so that we don't end up with nothing to renovate or for emergencies!!

Is it not SO hot when FH starts using tools and being all Mr. Fixit?!?! I'm surprised that we got anything done at our house-- FH did ALL of the work himself and I spent the entire 8 months trying to rip his clothes off... HAHAHAHA

Re: Your first house...
Our first 'house' will be my condo that I own now that we'll both live in after the wedding... After a year or so when our family grows we'll look for our real 'first house'...
