This is amazing. It looks like it is going to be gorgeous. Please keep us updated with pics. Mind me asking where about you -- don't have to be specific if you don't want.

Re: Your first house...
Oy....
We're in our first house already. It's a blessing and a curse, really. We are so lucky to have a house, I know. But FH bought the house from his uncle, and his grandma lent him money for the downpayment (this was 5 years ago when FH was in his mid 20s). So there are a lot of family ties and that really complicated everything. For one, his uncle was cheap and so a lot of stuff was wrong with the house, which we didn't find out until after we moved in. It also had not been updated since the early 80s - there were a lot of combos of red, black and white and wallpaper with like shapes and squiggly lines all over it. He bought the house for $300k. It is a 3 bedroom ranch in Huntington.
We've been putting so much into the house. Until you own one, you never realize how much work and how expensive it is. We remodeled the bathroom on a $4,000 budget and ended up spenging $9,000 Things like that make it emotionally, mentally and financially draining. But, in the end, we own a house so I guess it's hard to complain.
We won't be staying here forever, though. The house appraised at $100k more than what we bought it for, and now the principal on our mortgage is finally starting to shrink after 5 years. We're hoping that after I'm practicing for a year we can sell and upgrade to something that is newer and not as much of a fixer upper. Even 5 years later, there are still so many things that we need to do. Our office still has a 6 year old girl's wallpaper on it, including the glowing stars on the ceiling.

Re: Your first house...
I don't see ever getting a house. We live in LA, and you can't get anything that is in a safe neighborhood for under $600,000. In fact, two bedroom condos are about $400,000 in not-so-great areas. It's pretty disheartening. But you can rent pretty reasonably. If we bought something, our standard of living would go down because it would be so small and in such a bad area, that it wouldn't be worth it. Guess I'll wait until I hit it big (which isn't likely since I'm a teacher!!) Sigh!

We'll probably get a really great first house for about $300-350K.

Re: Your first house...
I think we are going to buy a foreclosure and make it a fixer upper and then flip it in order to buy the house we really want, however, if we like our foreclosure and all the fixing up we may do....we may just end up staying there!

Re: Your first house...
i think that if we didnt buy land in florida and didnt have to save for the wedding we could afford to buy a house here in staten island - between paying the RH and our land off we are paying a mortgage but we plan on moving to Florida a year after the wedding. my family is there and FH can transfer to a Bank of NY office there and we will be able to live off just his salary - we woud never be able to do that in staten island - at least not for awhile......its good because I will work for awhile and then whenever we decide to have kids i should be able to stay home with no problems.....houses we are looking at there are on a 1/4 acre of property (which we already have) and the one we are looking at is about 135K new construction without upgrades (3 bedrooms, 2 baths) of course we'll want to upgrade the shiiiit out of it and build a pool and do up the backyard - hopefully it won't cost us more than 250K.........for 250K in staten island you can get a shack in the ghetto
i am just terrified to move! but we really want a house and we want to live comfortably so it seems like the best choice we can make at this point......but still very scary!!

Re: Your first house...
Me and FH currently live in a townhome we bought together. We got lucky and got one of those next generation houses for $250,000 it's wonderful for now but once our family grows we will move. Even our next house probably won't be the house we stay in.....i can't imagine buying a house at 30 that i would stayin for a long time. I want a big house with a big yard and I know we wont' be able to afford that right away with the way houses cost around here....I'm from PA and I would love to move to get a bigger place for less money...I guess we'll see what happens!
So no, I plan on moving a few times to reach my dream house.

I think the house we buy after the wedding is the house we will be in for a while. The area that we want we can get a nice house for around $400,000 and I get sick just thinking about it, but what else can ya do if you want to live on the island ya know?
$400,000 is really what you're gonna spend if you want something that's nice ya know. it's so expensive to live here. it's really hard for young couples starting out. i lucked out that FH already had a house - but the bills add up it's hard
maybe in suffolk. nassau and queens are still way more than that, unless it's a fixer upper. my place is a co-op and i spent close to 300; houses in my area aren't even an option so I'm trying not to think about it. we'd like to look in RVC but starting out fixer uppers are around $500k; near baldwin where FH lives prices are a little more reasonable. We're waiting a few years to save b/c i already have a place... i'm not sure what's considered a starter house anymore - used to be $200k bought you a starter house; now a starter house is a co-op or if you're lucky a condo. I hate NY sometimes

Re: Your first house...
Right now FH and I will be living in an apt for atleast 2 years after the wedding. We want to save enough money to put a down payment on a house as well as having extra $ left over for emergencies or any fixing the house needs!
We both want to live in Sufflok though. And I am hoping that can come true because FH took the Suffolk Police Exam and has a really good chance! But we are staying in Suffolk regardless. My parents live in Babylon and their house is going for $700k and it is an old house (not apperance wise though). And I know Suffolk is not cheap anymore. yea Nassau is a little more expensive but on the real down south shore and the real north shore (on the water) it is expensive!!!!! So I think we might end up in West Islip or maybe even Islip, Patchouge (near FBIL and wife) or somewhere further Suffolk just not too far!!

Re: Your first house...
I'd say $400k is average for a home on LI...it's nuts because when we were looking for a house anything that was under $400k would fly off the market, we'd see an ad online or in the paper and go to call about it and it would be sold, have offers, etc. (very frustrating...but they just weren't meant to be). We bought our house as a starter home in April (2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms)...but hopefully when the time is right we'll make it into our dream home! But in all honesty I love my house just the way it is, my retro green kitchen and all, it's perfect for the 2 & of us...plus Daisy of course!

Re: Your first house...
I dont think we'll ever be able to afford anything on LI . We are thinking out west (Vegas, Phx). If FH could have his way, we'd move the day after our wedding. I think we should get an apt. here for a little while, get married and settled then move, but who knows. We haven't even started looking.
