And for oct2004.bride to say the Mets need to fix 'everything', this is true, but I think we have 'less' to fix than the Yankees.
we need some fab pitchers ...that is about it
the METS do need a lot more than that!
if you watched the playoffs, i think you'll agree you need more than 'fab' pitchers
you need guys that can hit in the big game

They did play bad the last four games but they hit pretty good when the score was 17 or was it 18?

Fair enough...throw out the 26 championships. Lets look at the recent past then:
1996-World Champions
1998-World Champions
1999-World Champions
2000-World Champions
2001-American League Champions
2003-American League Champions
I'm sure baseball hasn't changed THAT much since 1996.
agreed and you can throw out 2001 and 2003, League Championships are meaningless.
4 champiosnhips in 4 years is impressive, but it's a far cry from the inflated figure that Yankee fans and Yankee brass will have you believe

So have the mets been up to, since 1996?

Re: Adding salt to the wound
Oh Goodness , will this thread DIE already??The season is officially OVER. There isn't any more arguing to do ...
Fact: Yankees lost badly this postseason. YES we choked, and embarrassed themselves in the process, not to mention disappointed their legions of DIEHARD fans. Indeed heads will roll and the team will be restructured, and the Boss' will spend insane amounts of $$ to do so. Will that make them a better 'team' Probably not. Do I agree with how George runs his organization? Hell no. But I still love the Yankees nonetheless and would support them whether they were 1st, last or anywhere in between.
Fact: The Mets started out with potential, but weren't even in the running post the AllStar break. They swept the Yankees and obtained 'bragging rights' for the year. But all their true fans and even their critics will agree that they need some major shaking up. Hopefully for them, that will begin with a strong manager and some key trades in the off-season. Yet why punish their fans anymore by rehashing the obvious? They will be the first to admit the Mets haven't been the same since 2000 and it will probably take a few more years before they are back to the post-season
Fact: The RedSox kicked everyone's a$$es, humiliated the Yanks and Cards, and are the WS Champions of 2004. The 'curse' (
) is now broken. On paper they might not have been 'the best team' but they possessed some key things that no other team had this season -- heart, desire, drive, a 'never say die' attitude. The self described 'idiots' showed the world that they were finally going to bring the long suffering Boston fans a WS back to beantown. I might not like them, he!! lets face it I hate them -- but still they earned my congrats.Thems are the facts. And I think that ALL fans -- Yankee, Mets, Sox or otherwise -- cannot disagree with what transpired in 2004

Anything else is speculation, and everything else that occurred in this thread was somewhat based on the fact that Mets fans love to bash Yankee fans, and vice versa, and Sox fans love to bash Yankee fans, and so on and so forth...
We can resume this conversation come spring training. Then we'll ALL have a better idea of what our teams are shaping up to look like for the 2005 season
Good day, all

Boop, you seem to like to throw up the fact that the Mets choked first. Let's break it down.
Like DJPill said, all the Met fans, including myself will agree that 'we suck' and we probably won't be in line for the playoffs for the next several years. The problem with the Met management is that they care too much about the Yankees and George having too much share of the New York market and fan base. What the Mets need to do is concentrate on their farm system and develop the home grown talent, like David Wright for example. Giving away Kazmir was a stupid move and I'm sure we'll pay for that. But we need to forget about the playoffs, the World Series and competing with the Yankees and concentrate on 'cleaning the house' and making it stronger. That means guys like Piazza, Floyd and Matsui are gone. I have no use for them. We need young, hungry, players, who we can develop and grow. So, when you say we choked, that's not the case. We lost to better teams because we didn't have our priorities straight and opted to go after the 'big name' like Glavine without really developing a solid pipeline of home grown talent. It was bound to happen. I'm glad we learned this in July and not September, or the Met fans would be throwing themselves in front of 7 trains all across the city.
...the Mets have the heart, now we need the talent.
I am a bit confused by this post. First you say that management cares to much about the yankee's, then you say the mets need to concentrate on cleaning house, mets went after big names...but then you say that the Mets have the heart...seems like a contradiction to me.
If management had heart...they wouldn't care about the yankees.
If you clean house...then you would be getting rid of the same players you say have heart.
Big Names like Glavin have pretty much the same motives as A-rod..no heart there either.
Not trying to be a wisegal here, I really am just confused.

The Mets will be fine. What people forget is... even though they ended up with 91 losses... they stayed competitive for much longer this season than the two years prior. It was actually quite exciting to watch for a while.
I truly believe they will improve this year. Are they playoff ready? I doubt it. But since the NL East has a lot more parity... you never know.
I'll be curious to see what moves they make this year. Mo's contract is up I believe so thats money we will have to spend. We also are off the hook for Hidalgo's 15mil. Lets see what happens.
If Reyes stays healthy... with him at short and Wright at third... our infield defense will keep us in games. Our starting pitching is fine with Leiter, Glavine, Zambrano, Benson (if resigned) and Trax. We need a stud lefty setup guy to replace Franco. We also need to add an outfielder and deal with the 1B situation.
There is always a high premium to pay for starting pitching in the off-season. But the Mets rotation is one area where they need the least improvement IMO. They need bullpen help, as well as an OF and 1B.
