Anyone else see the report about pharmacists not filling perscriptions for birth control pills?
Original post by heidla
It was on the Nightly news last night. Some pharmacists refusing to fill perscriptions for the pill and the morning after pill because of their religious beliefs. Just curious what you all think.
I understand having convictions, but IMO you should do your job. If it bothers you that much then I think you should find a new line of work.

Let them not fill an accutane perscription because they heard accutane causes people to kill themselves. Or let them not fill a dietary suppliment because they feel that everyone should WORK (ie: work out) to lose their weight and not take the cheap way out.
This is clearly not the same thing as refusing to do something for religious reasons...
Then the pharmacist should be straight up from day one. When they are applying for their licence... they should let the board know 'I will not fill perscriptions at will if I feel its against my religious beliefs'.
We will see how quickly that person receives their pharmacist licence.

If they past the test they can not be denied for that reason...

Again Religious beliefs should not get into the way of your job.

Is it not illegal to withhold drugs from someone with a valid prescription?
Agree it is not illegal.. and I do think it is privately owned pharmacys denying these scripts.
REREAD what she WROTE!!!!!
Yeah???? and you mean What??? Also please refrain from capping to stress your yelling . Thanks
She wrote. Is it not illegal... Meaning she thinks it is. YOU wrote Agreed it is not illegal. I was capping to make sure you REREAD I don't think u read it right!
I forgot to take the agree out sorry.. but please don't cap I can understand reread with out it SAYING REREAD( yikes)
I just wanted you to reread since you read it wrong. And you Agreed with something that she didn't say. I didn't think we were in 5th grade anymore and by me typing in caps it was the end of the world.
I am sorry I didn't think by asking you not to cap is resorting to 5th grade tactics..

If a pharmacist did that to me, since I go to a chain. I would say, thanks, now have SOMEONE ELSE fill my script.
I applaud you and your beliefs, I don't care that they differ from my own, JUST DO NOT FORCE YOUR BELIEFS DOWN MY THROAT OR MAKE ME OUT TO BE AN EXAMPLE TO SUIT YOUR CAUSE!!!

You know what I almost stooping down to the fifth grade level by keeping this going with you, I am done. Sorry for being nice and wanting you to reread what she wrote so you didn't look like fool.
NOW back onto the topic,

I think women who wear burka's that cover their whole body should be forced not to wear them...It annoys me to see them. True, it's not directly effecting me...But hey, why not cause trouble for some other religion and those people who are just sticking to something they believe in...Perhaps if more people had something to believe in and stick to, there'd be less problems in the world....You're all getting so angry...LOOK at what these pharmacists are doing...They're not hurting you or judging you by denying you your prescription...There is a Duane Reade every 10 feet in Manhattan...Go find someone else who will fill it for you...Who cares that a few people won't fill it for you??????? I just don't get all this anger.

Maybe I live in Iowa and I have to drive 15 minutes to the first pharmacy and then another 20 minutes to the next pharmacy. The first one ouldn't fill it.

I am not angry. I am ,as I stated earlier, appalled. I don't go to the pharmacy for my daily dose of religion. I go to get what I have a legall right to obtain. I also think that when you start allowing people the right to refuse service based on religious/even personal belief you are entering into dangerous water. What if a person with AIDS needs their perscription filled for AZT and the pharmacist refuses because homosexuality is a sin in his eyes?
Edited for poor poor spelling.

The church is not against AZT. The church is against birth control. I do see what you're saying...I just don't agree with it.

Bottom Line here is...... It is your Job. You have to do things you don't like but it is your Job.
Isn't that what the Nazis who killed Jews said? They were just 'following orders', and 'doing their job'. I bet they didn't like it, either.
Excellent, excellent point!!!
'Just doing my job' should not be an excuse to go against your personally held convictions. If a pharmacist does not want to prescribe a morning after pill or BCP because of religious reasons, then go to another pharmacist.
And, in my profession, I have refused to handle certain matters because I found my proposed client's case to be morally repugnant. I won't compromise my beliefs and I don't think others should have to.

That's great that you can do that.
However, the pharmacist is not hired via retainer or in any other way solicited for the job, he/she is employed (usually by a corporation) to perform a function. In most corporations, pharmacies or not, if the employee refuses to perform a function, employee usually gets fired.

That's absolutely true. I am sure my pharmacy (a large chain) wouldn't go for it and would fire any employee who refuses to dispense any type of legal medication.
I would guess that pharmacies that are doing it are Mom and Pop type places, where the proprietors can make the rules.

Actually no they can not be fired for that , just like a catholic who requires good friday or a jewish person who requires their holiday off does that not mean they can't perform their job no it means that is their belief and we as other religions should respect it.

Exactly we don't know who is denying the scripts. If it is a chain maybe I can understand but I don't agree.

Wanna bet? Labor laws are weak in general. If a company wants to fire an employee... they can usually find a way to do so. Even if they don't explicitly say 'your fired cause you wouldn't fill the pill perscription'. They will find another reason.
