Can any of you Greek brides help me? Is it true that whomever you choose for your Koumbaro/Koumbara will be your first child's Godparent?

TIA

As per FH, he told me from the getgo that the Koumbaro will be the godparent. But i know even in Roman Catholic, my godparents were my parents best man and maid of honor.

Its tradition for your Koumbaro/Koumbara to the godparents of your first born. Just as naming your children after your parents, but traditions can be broken.

I wouldn't feel obligated. Also you can have more than one godmother and godfather. My goddaughter has 2 sets of god parents.

Re: *~*~*~*~GREEK BRIDES WEDDING THREAD~*~*~*~*

THanks ladies, I'm not Greek or Catholic, so this is all new to me. FMIL just told me about the Koumbaro/Koumbara being the Godparents for our first child and it just caught me off gaurd especially since I was hoping to have my sister be our first child's Godmother since I'm her first child's Godmother, now I feel bad cause she won't be. I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Is that normal?

Traditions are meant to be broken, and traditions vary from region to region in Greece. You don't HAVE to have your koumbaro/koumbara baptize the kids if you and FH don't want to.

I can imagine that all these strange-sounds traditions can be a bit overwhelming...having grown up with these traditions, I tend to take these things for granted. Younger Greeks (of our generation) are generally very embracing of new ideas, while many 'old-timers' of our parents' generation are resistant to change...it's something that I and my FH have to deal with on a daily basis with both of our off-the-boat Greek parents, so don't feel like you're alone in this battle. Feel free to vent about these things and ask your questions...we're here to help.

Aw, thank you
I'm Methodist, which is a pretty relaxed religion so all this is new to me. I'm so glad I have you girls to help me through it.

Re: *~*~*~*~GREEK BRIDES WEDDING THREAD~*~*~*~*

I'm back with another question. Has anyone heard of Three Angels Gifts in Huntington? Our priest told us to go there for the stefana and the candles and everything we need for the ceremony, but I can't seem to find it on google. Does anyone know where it is?

TIA

I don't know where that is but there a ton of places in Astoria where you can buy that stuff. Also, as per tradition, the koumbaro/koumbara buy those things.

Hi ladies,
Is anyone out there looking to decorate their own lambades? I have two extras (48') because I bought them wholesale for $25 each (yay!) I'll give them to someone for that same price if they can pick them up from me in Islip. Send me an FM if interested!

Are they just the candles, or do they have the tulle around them, too?

What do you mean by 'the process'?

The process of registering with the church and meeting with them about the wedding?

Or the process of having a Greek Orthodox ceremony in general?

Re: *~*~*~*~GREEK BRIDES WEDDING THREAD~*~*~*~*

I was told that we'll have 1 meeting with the priest we asked for at St. Catherine's ...I don't think we have to meet more than once, nor fill out a survey. He's an older man (in his 60s, but the priest of my childhood, so we specifically asked for him), so I'm expecting to be uncomfortable if he asks us personal questions. On the other hand, he's a widower, so I'm sure he'll have interesting insights into married life.
