Name some stores from when you were a kid that you loved but are now OOB

Original post by ambersmom

I used to love, love, love TSS. We used to go to the one in Hempstead and I thought it was soo cool when we parked on the top of the store and took the escalator down. I can still remember every inch of that store, even to how it smelled.

le petit mall at Roosevelt Field. There was a store that had Hello Kitty stuff.

The cookie place that was there before they renovated it, when it was one level and dark.

I'm not a Long Island girl so I dont know a whole lot of these places.. but my Mom used to work in Korvette's part time, and I truly would spend far TOO much time there.. I hated that place

Also Caldor's and Alexanders dept. stores were huge around me

My clearest memory is of Woolworths.. ahh all the junky toys in the world was mine for the taking! And they had one of those cheesy little places to eat lunch.. I thought this was the bomb. I would beg my mom, but she'd say no. Yet somehow I'd always sucker my grandma to take me, and I'd get a grilled cheese and potato chips .. ahh what a treat

And this isn't really a childhood memory, but I still miss Pergaments!! Sometimes I just need a LITTLE something something, and I find myself RESENTING that I have to go to the maddness that is Home Depot or Lowe's

OMG I just remembered one from the old B'way Mall (or should I say Mid Island :hah )--- NEWBERRY'S!!!
Jeez we used to go to that mall when there were like 4 stores left in it! Newberry's, Sterns, the Ice Cream Corner and the game room. It was so pathetic for a while. Huh- none of those stores are in business now...

My ex-sil used to work in the art gallery there. My brother used to take me up there to see her (Hi Deb!!) and then she'd buy me something from that Hello Kitty store. I used to go crazy over the mini-mini books of stationery and tiny-tiny crayons, etc.

You could get 10 pairs for like 30 bucks!!! Okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but where is a shoe store for me like that now?

of course, ditto....
and TSS too.
Dan's Supreme was a supermarket by us.

What about Alexanders in Sunrise Mall?

Does Richie Rich count?
There used to be so many mom and pop stores, that are all gone now.

as a teenager i LOVED the flea market near the bull in smithtown (what was the name?). we all bought the #44 lip gloss and slouchy socks there

roller skate rink -> laces in northport

restaurants -> howard johnsons (LOVED their hot dogs) and swensons.

i think the HJ restaurants are LONG gone, but there still might be a swenson in the americana shopping center.
