Ugh. My cousin is getting amrried on Fur Free Friday (day after thanksgiving), and they all boguht ew full lenght fur coats for the occasion. I could PUKE. AND it's Fur free friday.

I'm really worried about my wedding. It's going to be winter. I really hope they have enough sense and respect to leave the fur at home!

Ew. I honestly didn't know there was a Fur Free Friday, but I don't wear fur anyhow. That would really annoy me!

I'm sure they don't know, and I'm sure they don't care either. It's just gross. I hope they dont show up in fur at my wedding. I really hope they have enough respect not to do that, they know how I feel about it.

They probably didn't know it is Fur Friday. But I am interested in what you think about this. Shouldn't you respect their right to wear fur as they respect your right not to wear fur?

The day after Turkey day is labeled Black friday because it is when all retail stores that were in the RED move back to the black...

I have heard of the Fur free friday... I don't know why or how it was named this. I am trying to remember.. Ugh long years of retail-- still nothing..

I see what you're saying, Marymoon, but I bet that your cousin didn't know it was fur free Friday. I'd try to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. If you tell her that you don't want fur at your wedding, she'll respect that, right?

I'm SURE she didn't know. It's just//ick..fur coats bought specifically FOR fur free friday.

Fur Free Friday is the day that people like me protest in front of stores like Macys, Saks, ad other fur retailers. I've ALWAYS known about fur free friday, as have most of my friendsd, so to me it's common knowledge in my circles.

For the record, I never said they don't have a right to wear fur. I just think it's wholly cruel and disgusting.

if they did show up at my wedding in fur (and my mom thnks they will), I'll probably throw them out. When I was a kid, they cmae over in their furs, evena fter knwoing how it made me and my mom sick , so I tried to take their coats aoutside and 'put the roadkill back on the road where it belongs'...my dad stopped me, and put the coats in the basement where I didn't have to see them. needless to say, they didn't wear them over very much after that.


ETAL I was thinking of wearing a 'No fur' pin to the wedding (yes, in my ballgown), because that's what I'd normally wear on FFF. Is that rude?

The History of Fur-Free Friday



A historical perspective provided by Cres Vellucci, one of the founders of this important event.


'Fur-Free Friday' was created in 1986 by Trans Species Unlimited (TSU), based in Pennsylvania with West Coast offices in California, as a way to focus on department stores' decision to sell fur. At the time, George Cave was the director of TSU, and Cres Vellucci was the West Coast Director.

Prior to Fur-Free Friday, there were sporadic fur protests in the early and mid-1980s. However, activists with TSU felt there needed to be some kind of coordinated action to increase the intensity of protest against the cruelties of the fur industry. TSU also wanted activity that was more dramatic than passing out flyers.

In creating Fur-Free Friday, the intent was to provide grassroots activists all over the U.S. the opportunity to participate in a coordinated direct action against department stores. The focus was also placed on acts of nonviolent civil disobedience at these stores, similar to the lunch counter sit-ins and other civil rights actions.

In 1985, in a prelude to this organized event, two groups of activists - one in the New York Macy's and another in the Sacramento Macy's - did the first-ever coordinated, non-violent civil disobedience activity protesting fur in the U.S. The arrests totaled several dozen. The following year, the dedicated anti-fur activists hit stores on what is widely known as the busiest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving. The day became known in the movement as Fur-Free Friday.

At its height of popularity among activists, Fur-Free Friday involved dozens of grassroots groups in more than 30 states, all engaged in non-violent protests that resulted in hundreds of arrests. Meanwhile, as Fur-Free Friday grew, fur sales slumped. In the 1980s, fur sales topped more than $2 billion a year and, likely due to protests such as Fur-Free Friday, have dwindled to about half that currently.

By the early and mid-1990s, Fur-Free Friday had been recognized in the animal movement as being one of the most widely attended U.S. protests against animal suffering. Nationally recognized organizations such as In Defense of Animals (IDA) have been significant promoters of the movement-wide event by providing anti-fur posters and informational literature.

In 1997, Fur-Free Friday saw a range of activities, including non-violent civil disobedience. More than 100 dedicated activists were arrested while making their statements of protest against fur. Fur-Free Friday is one of the few nationally recognized days in the animal movement with 'ownership' belonging to grassroots activists determined to halt the cruel fur industry and retailers of its products.

Hmm... I don't know if it's rude, but wearing a pin on your gown might be a major fashion faux pas!

i never even heard of fur free friday and i know plenty of people who only know it as 'black friday.' you are entitled to your opinion, but i don't see how them buying fur really affects you. i don't think that people do it intentionally.

No offense, but just because you're anti-fur, you can't expect everyone to alter their wardrobes just to please you. It's her wedding and she should be able to wear whatever she wants and not have to think if she's upsetting anyone.

Are you really going to throw them out of your wedding if they show up with their furs on?
