Re: Paging all Latin Brides

Hi ladies! I'm glad to have found this thread!

I'm not necessarily Latina but my parents and family are all from Panama. Does that count?

FH is Guyanese but Iwill definitely be incorporating some Panamanian traditions into our '09 wedding.

I look forward to getting to know ya and sharing ideas and traditions

Re: Paging all Latin Brides

wanted to post this for my fellow latinas! original post i did on 2007 board:

most anyone who is hispanic--should know about this wedding tradition...called the 13 Arras or 13 Monedas. where a 'chest' of some sort is presented from the groom to the bride....with 13 coins in it---representing that he is giving her posession of all his wordly goods & wealth....and the bride's acceptance of these is that she will be the caretaker of his home and posessions. groom pours the coins into bride's hands and rests the chest on top. (as he is giving her his home) is a cute tradition for the ceremony!

this is the pretty silver chest i am buying, with the 13 coins.

the original purpose of 13 is supposed to be jesus & the 12 apostles. but there is a new spin on it--since i'm not reglisous...and now the coins are 'unity' coins and each one represents the 13 things needed for a strong marriage:

Love
Committment
Respect
Joy
Happiness
Harmony
Wisdom
Wholeness
Nuturing
Caring
Cooperation
Peace

YIPEE!!!!

Re: Paging all Latin Brides

is anyone doing copias? I am hlaf pr and half italian and my mom, the italian, when she married my dad had copias and she wants me to do it too, but I am afraid that no one will understand the tradition and will throw away the copias that my aunt wants to make for me...there will only be like 12 spanish people at the wedding, we aren't very close with that side...what do I do...

PS-FH is Mostly Itailan, german and irish, and I dont look PR at all...

FROM A WEDDING WEBSITE FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS
At the traditional Puerto Rican reception it is customary for a doll, dressed similar to the bride, to be placed at the head of the main table.

This 'bride doll' is covered with little charms, and are given to the guests as gifts. 'Copias' are also passed out as presents to guests. These reception favors are ornately decorated cards with the newlyweds names and the date of the marriage.

Re: Paging all Latin Brides

Hey ladies! I had no idea there was a latin board. I'm half PR and half Haitian. FH is Italian/German/Irish, but I wanted to incorporate some of my heritage into the wedding. I was thinking about doing copias, but would that be the favor or would I have to do something else?

Re: Paging all Latin Brides

Hello ladies!! So glad you guys are keeping this thread going so strong. I'm also very happy to see fellow brides carrying out the arras and lasso traditions. I did both of them at my ceremony. I encourage you all to ask your parents if they've held onto these heirlooms. You'll be surprised that they still have them. Had I not mentioned something to my mom, I would have never known. I was able to use my parents arras and their lasso from their wedding ceremony. Good luck to all and fm me if you have any questions.

Re: Paging all Latin Brides

Although I am not incorporating either of those traditions, I am having the religious ceremony in spanish vs english. I think that is a nice touch. I really like the Reverand that I am having.

It's nice to know that there are still a few latinas on here.
