My RH gave us a 'recommended' amount we should tip the maitre'd. I nearly fell off my chair. Would anyone mind sharing what they tipped or are planning on tipping? I'm just trying to figure out if I'm completely out of touch with 'tipping norms'. Thanks in advance ladies.

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
My sister used to work at Venitian Yatch Club...so I was asking her about this the other night actually
She said no way in heII should I be tipping the maitre'd $3-4 per person!! My sister said he/she doesn't need $600+ if you only have 175 people.
She said you tipped them more than the Bridal Attendant, but my min is 175 and I am doing $2 per person which would be about $350. And if I love my maitre'd I will give them another $100
But yeah I think it's crazy. My sister said they are getting paid-and alot better than the waitress/waiters and she said those are the people doing most of the work!!!

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
I'm glad I read this post. East Wind told me 3-5 per person. I guess I'll do more towards the 3 end than the 5 end. We're only having 125 people!

I am getting married at JT too, what was the 'recommended' amount they suggested to tip?
Well they can suggest...but I am giving what I want and what I feel they deserve and I am starting at $2 per person!

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
See this is what I was thinking originally, like $3-4 per person, maybe a bit more if I really felt that he was great. My RH told me that they 'recommend' giving $1000
My FH thought I was having a stroke bc I could barely speak, lol.

R u kidding me!!! I'm getting married at JT and def. NOT giving $1000 for the maitre'd.
I'm having 175-200 people at my wedding and I had budgeted $500-$550., which is almost $3pp The bridal attendant I'm thinking of tipping $150-$200.

yeah definitely NOT giving a $1000 either. They don't need nor deserve $1000 for what they do. I know they work hard, but come on they aren't serving every table the food etc. like the waiters are.
But I guess I am going to start $2.50-3.00 per person and then go from there if they are great that night.

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
This is a dumb question- but does the maitre'd keep the whole tip or does he split it with the waiters- we were gonna tip the $3-$5 range, but we thought that they also paid the waiters with that money

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
My friend who is a banquet manager suggested between $2-$4 per guest for the maitre'd. I'm not sure how much my parents ended up giving, but I def would have stayed toward the lower end. $2 or $3 pp is plenty, IMO.

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
I agree that 1000 is a lot of money to suggest and would never pay it either. But keep in mind that the total you give him he splits with the wait staff and bridal attendant. Our suggested price was3 -5 pp but I do not know how much my DH gave them in the end I know he gave extra b/c my Matr'd was amazing!!!!

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
what about your banquet manager? the suggested tip for our maitre d was about $3-4 per person (we'll be having about 190) and then the bridal attendant, and then another 'suggested' tip for our manager....anyone else doing this????

i think some halls might say they split it, but i know my sister did alot of weddings as a waitress (she was mostly a bridal attendant) but she did wait staff and they never saw any of that tip the maitre'd got

Re: Please help with maitre'd tipping question
As much as I am SURE my maitre 'd will be top notch and all that, I just can't afford to tip them this crazy amount. I asked my BM and she said that they suggest $2-$4 per person, but that it is entirely based on how we feel. While I would love to be able to tip my maitre 'd $4 a person, that is going to come out to $800 for me. I just can't do that. We just did the tip envelopes and I put $450 in there, b/c that's what I can afford so hopefully they can live with that.
ETA: Our Maitre 'D won't be splitting w/the wait staff but will be splitting with the Maitre 'D assistant.
