Unconventional Reception Venues
Hello,I am new here, only posted once before. I am recently engaged and just starting to think of places to hold my wedding. I'm hoping someone can suggest a place that might fit our style.
I do not like the standard halls like jericho terrace, crest hollow, etc ... i am not a marble and mirror type of person. I am relaxed, simple, and I am interested in knowing about any places you girls have found or heard of that are rustic, simple, casual, clean-looking (ie not ornate) and not very expensive. I am not against paying a site fee and bringing in a caterer, but I cannot afford an exorobitant site fee.
I looked at a lot of wineries this weekend and if they charge less than $500 (one was $15K!!!!), they only hold 100 people. So as much as wineries were what I was interested in, they are pretty much out now.
I am interested in covered decks, covered porches, pavilions, barns, and other similar ideas. I'd love for my wedding to be in an indoor-outdoor type of setting, but I'm not against a completely indoors setting if the room is light and airy, not dark, and not ornate.
Basically, I'm looking for something different, homey, and beautiful. I'm not against a tent but prefer a deck, patio, etc. Hotels that have a deck or patio would be fine.
I have looked at the hallockville farm museum barn and plan on checking out the Frank Brush Barn, The Snapper Inn, Captain Bill's, and some state parks' pavilions.
Any ideas you all mya have will be greatly appreciated.
THANKS FOR READING! I know it was long.

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
Well my Cousin got married in a town right outside Poughkeepsie (Don't know if I spelt that right), NY a couple of years back and it was A historical Barn that was made into a historical museum. The ceremony was outside and the back drop was the Hudson River ( her wedding was in September SO the Trees where already starting to change color), and the reception was in the barn. It was really nice and different!!!! If you don't mind traveling, its about 1 to 1 /12 hours away from NYC you should definitely check it out!!

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
that was my first plan when we got engage is to get married in a winery...we went all over from upstate NY to the hamptons and LI wineries...I fell in love with Bendell but their site fee is super expensive...Sat is $15K, Sun $13K plus you need to book a caterer that has liquor license,...too much for me...Oh yeah the $15K doesn't incl. table/chair/napkins..basically you are paying to breath in the vineyard

Have you tried Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue? My cousin got married there a few years ago, it kinda has the feel of a vineyard without really being a vineyard.
She got married on Labor Day, I don't think they paid too much,
Good luck though!!!

I didn't want a normal RH either, I'm a more casual person, so I saw the Crescent Beach Club and knew immediately that was it. It's a casual yet fun place. Good luck!!

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
There is an old beautiful historical barn in Aquebogue called Hallock House. I have seen pictures of a wedding there. They had a simple tent errected outside and had dinner in the tent and they had the DJ set up in the bar and had dancing in there. You can get as fancy or as simple as you want there!! it is really beautiful. The site fee is $1000 for the whole day, and if they don't have anything else booked that weekend you can go the night before and decorate etc. FM me for more questions.

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
Here's a bride who got married in a barn at the Smithtown Historial Society. Sounds like a lovely wedding, and if I had heard about it before I booked mine, I might have thought about it seriously for our wedding.BTW, I totally get what you're saying about marble and mirror. Wasn't what we wanted either. However, we put ourselves on a limited budget ($10K) as we want to buy a house later this year, and to be honest, we just don't want to spend more than that on one day. However, I quickly found out that 'unusual' generally equals 'expensive.' So we looked at the Three Village Inn, where I've eaten brunch many times, and then at Timber Point, where we booked. Timber Point does have your standard ballroom, but overall in feel it's more like a comfortable mansion, than a glitzy hall. We're quite happy in our choice, and to be honest, the barn wedding sounds like a LOT of work. But maybe it's for you! It really looks beautiful:

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
I have never attended a function there, so I can't really give any opinion, but the aquarium (Atlantis Marine World) is definitely unconventional. As for beach pavilions, check out the Pavillion at Sunken Meadow. I've never been to a function there either, but it is owned by Lessing's, so I am sure the food must be good - I've been to most of their other locations.

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
Jedediah Hawkins Inn is a beautiful restaurant and inn out east that has a huge property with a barn. Pretty much, if you spend at least $10,000 on food, beverage, ect you get the whole house to yourself.Link

The Greenporter hotel in Greenport NY. It is out east on the North Fork of Long Island. They seem to provide catering for many local venues.

Re: Unconventional Reception Venues
Check out the woodlands, royalton, glenn cove mansion... I thought all three were great for non-conventional settings and all had an area for outside ceremonies and cocktail hrs--unfortunately for us, none were big enough for our wedding, esp in the event of rain, but I thought they were great venues.

My friend was married at Vineyard Caterers in 2004 and it seems pretty close to what you are looking for? I don't know what she paid but I don't think there is a site fee. Also, FH and I looked at Captain Bills and it also seems like what you are looking for. it's very light and airy... right on the water. Cocktail hour is in a tent on the deck. Another idea is The Carriage House at Milleridge Inn. Good Luck!

Im getting married at the Majestic Gardens. It doesnt have a really old rustic feel to it, but the gardens are definitely worth checking out! I loved it as soon as I saw it and I didnt want the super-formal look either.Check it Out!

Danfords in Port JeffSmithtown Landing
George Washington Manor
Old Field Club
Many museums, galleries, and historical societies also allow you to hold receptions in their facilities.
But of the four I listed up top, at Danfords and Smithtown Landing, you can get your pp price for $100 or less all inclusive, which is always a great thing!
