Re: Hey Slow Cookers!
I made this beef stew-- it tasted amazing-- even better the next day. i added more veggies than listed. I increased my celery !!2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 onion, chopped
1 1/2 cups beef broth
3 potatoes, diced
4 carrots, sliced
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 pkg McKormick Beef Stew Seasoning
Red Wine( I like cabernet it gives it a nice depth)
Place meat in slow cooker. In a small bowl mix together the flour, salt, and pepper; pour over meat, and stir to coat meat with flour mixture. Stir in the garlic, bay leaf, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, onion, beef broth, potatoes, carrots, and celery.
Cover, and cook on Low setting for 10 to 12 hours, or on High setting for 4 to 6 hours.
Here are the additions i followed for a more amazing stew!!!
Put flour mixture into gallon-sized, zippered bag. Shake beef in bag to coat. Sauté coated beef in 1-2 tablespoons olive oil until browned. Add chopped onion to beef to sauté and soften. Transfer to slow cooker. 2. Mix beef broth (I used Swanson's Certified Organic in aseptic carton) with 1 TABLEspoon Worcestershire and ½ cup red wine. Pour into hot skillet to deglaze, then pour over beef and onions in cooker. 3. Add remaining ingredients with these additions: increase garlic to 2 cloves minced, 2 bay leaves; add 1 packet McCormick's Beef Stew Seasoning. Your home will smell wonderful all day, and your meal will be a savory feast! I served the stew in bowls, accompanied by slices of fresh, crusty bread

Re: Hey Slow Cookers!
I just played around with some stuff I had in my cabinets last week and made an indian inspired take on pea soup that was AMAZING!!!a lined my crokpot with just a touch of olive oil so nothing would stick. Then in a blender (since my food processor is really tiny) I pureed a cut up zucchini, half a chopped onion, minced garlic and oilve oil. it came out the same consistency of hummus. I poured that into the crockpot. Then I pureed 3 cans of chickpeas with a little oilve oil and again it came out liuke hummus. not all of the chickpeas got pureed which was good becuase it gives the soup some texture. i poured the chickpeas into the crockpot. then i added a can of ro-tel diced tomatos and green chiles. then i proceeded to season like nuts!! i didnt measure i just added a generous shake of each:
salt
pepper
red pepper flakes
cinnamon
nutmeg
cayenne pepper
ground ginger
cajun season-all
cumin
onion powder
paprika
a sprinkle of sugar for sweetness
and a squeeze of spicy brown mustard
once it was hot like soup it still needed something so i threw in a package of frozen spinach. I let it simmer for a few hours to warm and wilt the spinach. It was delicious!! it was the same consistency of a split pea or a lentil soup but definitely a mediterrean or indian kinda taste.
i know it sounds like a mess but trust me it was really amazing!! and i had all of this in the cabinets and fridge already.

Re: Hey Slow Cookers!
Meatballs are the BEST when made in the crock pot! Here is my own personal recipe, and you have to cook them in the SAUCE not in a stupid frying pan beforehand. My grandmother would roll over in her grave.1 package ground turkey (or turkey sausage for a kick)
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup parmesan cheese
1 egg
1 tsp s & p
basil and oregano to taste
1 tbsp garlic (or more to taste)
1-2 jars premade marinara sauce-depends on the size of your crockpot (I can give you a slow cooker recipe to make your own sauce too if you want it!)
Empty the sauce into the crockpot and start heating on high. Mix all of the remaining ingredents together in a bowl and form into balls. Drop balls into sauce and cook on high 4-6 hours.
I have a medium sized crockpot, so you can scale up or down for your size!

You guys are awesome - everything sounds so delicious!!!This is the one I got - I haven't used it yet but will start tonight! It was rated really high on Amazon so I chose it. I used to have a 4 qt manual one and I hated it, bought it really cheap and it didn't do the job. So excited to have this one!

I bought slow cooker liners from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You just stick it in the pot and throw it out when you are done! Super easy!

dont be afraid of that i leave mine on when i go out all the time, never had an issue. plus the best part is how good the house smells when i get home!!
also this is one of my fav recipes for chicken
Citrus Garlic Roasted Chicken
Its not intended for the slow cooker but i had a whole chicken so i thought what the heck why not. i lined my crockpot with cut up oranges and placed the chicken on top with marinade all over it. OH MY GOD!! it was the juiciest chicken ever!! falling off the bone good!!

Re: Hey Slow Cookers!
just a tip on cleaning, if you dont have the liners...after you take all the food out. drop in some dishwashing liquid and fill w water (leaving a few inches to spare). then put the lid on and put it on the 'warm' setting....
enjoy whatever else you are doing (eating, dessert, watching some tv, etc). then go back and unplug it.
i usually leave it overnight to cool down (mainly cuz im tired by this point, lol). but in the morning, i toss the liquid out and the rest of the container is soooo easy to clean!
the warm bubbles did most of the work for you. nothing left sticking!

I do this too! But my slow cooker has an insert that comes out so I can soak it in the sink if I want. The worst part is the lid, it doesn't seen to get clean ever!

Re: Hey Slow Cookers!
I took all your advice and used my slow cooker this past weekend for the poconos.I made
Slow Cooked Pork Carnitas Tacos
2 pounds boneless country-style pork ribs or pork shoulder (Boston butt), cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
2 teaspoons dried oregano (preferably Mexican)
1/2 large onion, cut into 4 pieces
1 avocado, halved, pitted, sliced
Fresh cilantro sprigs
Corn tortillas
Roasted Tomatillo Salsa
Toss pork in bowl of slow cooker with salt, black pepper, and dried oregano to coat. Place onion pieces atop pork. Cover slow cooker and cook pork on low setting until meat is very tender and falling apart, about 6 hours.
Using slotted spoon, transfer pork to cutting board. Discard onion pieces. Using fingers, shred pork; transfer carnitas to platter. Place avocado slices, cilantro sprigs, and sliced red bell peppers, if desired, alongside. Wrap corn tortillas in damp kitchen towel; microwave until warm, about 1 minute. Serve carnitas with warm tortillas and tomatillo salsa.
