Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

I went for my check up yesterday and was telling the doctor about how I was doing on WW. I was telling him it seemed my weight loss just came to a complete hault in August.

I was also discussing with him about a cough I have been having. He was checking my neck and throat and said my Thyroid felt enlarged.

I have to go for a sonagram next week for my thyroid.

Does anyone know anything about the thyroid or how it effects your weight???

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

Yes it does affect your weight depending on the thyroid you can gain weight or lose weight. My friend has to take medicine the rest of her life, but she lost weight when this happened. Don't get nervous yet because at one time when I was gaining weight the doctor felt my thyroid and he said it was enlarged and sent me for a few tests and it seemed to be nothing, so don't get alarmed yet! Hope everything is fine for you!

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

Your thyroid affects just about EVERYTHING in the body - heart rate, body temperature, metabolism, etc.

Hypoactive - If your thyroid does not produce enough hormones you will feel sluggish, have difficulty losing weight, feel the cold a little more. You would be prescribed something like synthroid that will replace the hormone your body cannot produce on it's own. That's what I take, but there are several brands.

Hyperactive - If your thyroid is over active, too many hormones are prodcued and you basically feel like an idoling race car - rapid heart beat, jittery/trembling, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, sensitive to heat, etc. This is treated with medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery (usually as a last resort).

It's easily treatable, but very important that it is.

FM if you have any questions - I was treated for Graves Disease (type of hyperactive) which left me hypoactive.

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

I had my thyroid removed last year and I am still being treated to get my levels correct. I take Synthroid. Since my surgery I have gained about 25 pounds :(. but on a brighter side I am finally getting the energy to get back to the gym 3 times a week. Its been an ongoing stuggle.

FM me if you have any questions.

also, did your Dr take a blood test? They can tell you from that if your levels are too low.

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

I think Chloegirl found out she had hypothyroidism.
You should FM her. I may be totally wrong, but I think I remember her saying that a while ago.

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

Kathy116 is right!

During a physical months ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I really didnt have any of the sluggishness or weight gain associated with it. So I was told to get retested a month later and hold off on the meds. Well the retest showed levels were fine and no need for medication. I was told to come back in 6 months and test again....but i have been bad and have not been retested yet. I will though soon.

This was all done through a blood test...i was never told to get a sonogram.

I did some extensive research on this...let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

I have an underactive thyroid. I have been taking medicine since I was 13 for it. I am sooooooooo hyper sensitive to the cold it's not even funny. i had gained a lot of weight when i was younger and then gradually lost it while i continued to go through adolesence and such....The dr. thinks mine was caused by a virus--there's some really long japanese name for it. but i felt soooo tired and my neck was sooooooooooooooooo enlarged i couldn't even button a shirt. but i'm fine now, i take my little purple pill everday don't worry--you don't sound like you have anything really indicating that you have a problem. I'll be praying for you! let us know how it turns out! FM me with any questions!

Re: Does anyone know anything about the Thyroid and weight loss or gain

What endless is talking about is what I have-- Hatimoto's (not sure if I am spelling it correctly) The doctor feels that mine was brought on by the stress of the wedding. It happened at the same time as the dress fiasco.

It can also be genetic. My father is severally hyper active, so I always request the test when i get blood work.

I have also had a false test result, where it came back hyper and then a week later i was fine but we I was diagnosised this time it wasn't a false I caused me to gain a lot of weight before my wedding. I was exhausted I am almost feel asleep driving to work.

The one thing I did not have was a goiter- thankfully. Melissa, FM me if you have any questions, there is also a thryroid disease website that I can get for. Moria (julybride444) also has it.
