DARK COLOR, SMALL OR BIG?

I always thought that dark colors made a room look small. however last night i watched queer eye for the straight guy and the one that does the decorating said that its most peoples misconception that dark makes a room look smaller when it actually makes it look bigger...

Im so confused.. i wanted my living room rasin tort, but then decided against it when i figured it would look so small...

HELP

Re: DARK COLOR, SMALL OR BIG?

I totally agree with this. I dont really understand the concept of dark colors making a room look smaller. I have a dark green bedroom and a dark blue office and they dont look any smaller now than when they were white.

However, dark colors do make a room look darker. So if you dont have a source of natural light, you might want to think about that aspect. IN my case, I painted one wall a dark burgandy and left the other walls a beigey color. I think it added a punch of color without making it seem dark. But for rooms like a bedroom or office, a dark color is nice b/c its soothing.

Re: DARK COLOR, SMALL OR BIG?

We painted our bedroom a chocolate milk brown color and it never made the room look smaller. I saw the same thing on Queer Eye last night and thought finally someone saying that because I agree!

Re: DARK COLOR, SMALL OR BIG?

For the record, Ive always heard people say that dark rooms make a room look smaller...but decorators say that dark colors receed which would make the room look slightly larger. But in the end, the difference is negliable.

I think people get confused b/c wearing black is slimming and thus they think it makes everything look smaller. Well, thats only true b/c black makes something receed when sitting next to something colorful which jumps out. So if you wear black pants and a white top, it makes your top look larger and your bottom look smaller. But it doesnt apply for walls.
