Spinoff of Pet Lover post...having a cat around a baby?

I am just wondering what everyone's opinions on this subject is. I am not planning to have kids for a few more years, but I have 2 cats that I treat like my children. My FH and FILs keep telling me that I'll have to give the cats to someone else for the first year after having a baby! I do not think I could do this...it would break my heart to lose my kitties.

Any opinions? Has anyone had a cat around a baby?

I do not intend on getting rid of my cat. I, personally, could never do it. I think that it may take a little extra work in the beginning to make sure nothing happens, but I just couldn't see myself bringing home my baby and saying goodbye to an animal I have had for a couple of years. She is like my child!

Re: Spinoff of Pet Lover post...having a cat around a baby?

My cat could care less about Damien

He still walks around like he is the king

The only thing we do differently is to keep him in the kitchen when we are sleeping so he doesn't go on the bed

I just read an article in one of my parenting magazines that a new study has found that infants exposed to cats are less likely to get asthma and allergies (to cats that is )

thats what I plan...my cat wouldn't hurt the baby (now that she has no nails)...but we has a tendency to what to sit on your face....

Re: Spinoff of Pet Lover post...having a cat around a baby?

My brother and SIL have 3 cats...and a 6 month old and a new baby on the way. There was no way they were giving up the cats. However, they do have a netting over the crib...because before the baby was brought home, they set up the furniture...and the cats thought that was their new bed. But...no problems and everyone is co-habitating nicely!

I myself have 2 cats...and do not plan to give them up.

Re: Spinoff of Pet Lover post...having a cat around a baby?

we have a cat and DH would never even consider getting rid of her when we have kids.

i think you just have to use common sense - if your cat is a jumper, i would close the door to the baby's room when he/she was sleeping. a cat w/nails has the potential to do more harm than a declawed cat, etc. you will probably have some jealousy issues in the beginning, but they will be fine.
