Unity Candle Question

How many of you are doing unity candles? Is it done during the ceremony, or at the reception? I have read that you are supposed to leave your unity candle lit for one hour after you light it. If that is true, where do you leave it until you blow it out? Can you all please explain to me what the 'proper procedure' is for unity candles? We are still trying to decide if we want to do this or not, and your answers would help. Thanks!

Heidi

Re: Unity Candle Question

I am confussed about this too... when we met w/ our minister he gave us a sample program that mentioned a candle lighting so I am assuming that is the unity candle but I am really not too sure...

Re: Unity Candle Question

We're doing it. I believe te parents (or anyone else you want) light the tapers at the beginning of the ceremony and then you and DH light the actual unity candle after you've taken your vows. I've not heard anything about having to leave it lit for an hour. It remains lit throughout the rest of your ceremony and I guess the priest or someone else blows it out after everyone's left the church.

Re: Unity Candle Question

i didnt leave mine lit after the cermony. i was handed it by the woman that took care of the church. i had my cousin and one of my bridesmaids light the tapers and then they handed it to my dh and i and we lit the unity candle. i think its a nice touch especially if you want to remember a family member or need to honor someone that wasnt in the wedding party

Re: Unity Candle Question

we are having our parents light the taper candles and then we'll light the unity candle. it'll be lit til the ceremony is over. (not for an hour though considering our ceremony is only half hour long)

Re: Unity Candle Question

I think tradition has it that you light it with your parents and then light it again on every anniversary ??????????

Re: Unity Candle Question

We are doing it but i never heard of leaving it lit. You light it after vows to show joining together of 2 families. Usually parents or some family member light taper.
