Anyone set a date for their wedding, book the hall and then postpone the date?

My wedding is still 8 months away and I feel like I need more time since I am considering going to grad school. Is it difficult to postpone with the reception hall?

I'm planning on going back to school too, but I'm going to wait until next January. As far as your hall goes, you may lose part, if not all of your deposit, based on whether they're able to book that date after you cancel/postpone. How does you FH feel about this? I think mine would be really upset and insulted, even if the decision had nothing to do with our relationship. JMHO

how does it affect grad school? you could always have the wedding and postpone the honeymoon(many people do that)..... i agree with the other girl, how does your fh feel about this?

It really depends on the hall... I doubt they will be able to rebook with only 8 mos left so that might be a problem.. if it were further away they probably wouldnt mind.. I know a few people on here who have done it. ( moved up or back)

if you cancel in NYC or Suffolk County more than 6 months prior to the wedding the law says they must return your deposit (except for $100 for administrative costs). Nassau County does not have this law. I would think the place would gladly postpone rather than lose your business altogether. Good luck.

Re: Anyone set a date for their wedding, book the hall and then postpone the date?

I hate to break it to you but your wedding is actually only SEVEN months away (I'm the day before you!). Anyway, I think that if you are worried about having time to plan you shouldn't be because I feel that I still have plenty of time. I just got alot of stuff done this weekend that most people after had done a long time ago. You definitely have time to plan.

If the issue is that you feel you aren't ready to be married just yet or just want more time to do other things (school, find a better job, etc) then yes, I would postpone. I would think the hall would want to keep your business, should work with you on the postponement. I can see them maybe not refunding your deposit for the original date but not charging you the full cancelation penalty stated in your contract. I say give them a call and negotiate. You never know, they may not penalize you at all. I moved my date UP by 7 months (for a lesser price per person even) and was not penalized at all.

Good luck!!
