Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

I dont think I could but heres my I ask.
A friend of ours brother moved form the island to Arizona. After several years he came back to Long Island. Hes now moving his family back here because he said its too much on the island. Life is too much here and the $$ to live is ridiculous.

I feel like that- we make awesome salaries but cant seem to get ahead. the cost of living is ridiculous and I feel we are constantly struggling. I know ther eisnt any place like NY but I do wonder...

Whats your thought and feelings?

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

If my family wasn't here, I'd move in a heartbeat. Don't get me wrong, I love it here. We have things that not many places do, BUT the $$$ to live here is getting more and more ridiculous.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

we are so out of here so fast....not only is the cost of living absolutely ridiculous, the way of living is so opposite of what kind of people we are. I hate it here...I can't wait to move....I'll miss my family and friends, but I want my own life.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

I am also dying to get out of here. We are thinking about moving to North or South Carolina. We make pretty decent salaries here and are pretty good at saving money but it seems like we will never have an 'easy' life here and that is what I want So as soon as I can convince my FH we are leaving. Right now he says 2-3 years but I want to be out of here 1-2. I will miss my family and friends but the way I see it is I will always be working my weekend job to stay here in addition to my full time job, and I will never be able to be a SAHM (I only want to work p/t once I have kids). So hopefully we wil be in N. Carolina soon

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

Think about it a lot. We lived in NC for about 1 1/2 years a few years ago but came back. It was nice down there, but we really did miss our families and friends. My brother & SIL and neice live there and now my best friend has moved there and the cost of the house she just built - well, for what she paid for a beautiful 4 BR 2 story house, we could barely get a cardboard box here. But, there is the fact here that we're near the water here(original plan had been to move to the coast of NC but all the hurricanes there scare me) and now that DH's sister is due to have a baby here, can't really use the 'we could spend time with our neice' reasoning anymore. One day maybe we'll try it again- of course by the time we do, the cost of living there will probably have gone up a lot anyway.

Us too. We worked so hard in school to have the nicer things in life, and I think we will always struggle here. My parents moved to Florida, and when I see what we could have down there... huge, brand new house, with some grass. In a few years....

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

I think about it, I even make comments to FH about it but in the end we are really close to our families and most of them are here on LI and neither of us really wants to leave that.

I think if we were going to do it, now would be the time b/c I want my kids to be able to grow up with family around them. And i cant see my parents or my FILs moving anytime soon.

I like that on any random sunday I can stop by my FILs and my FBIL will show up after a soccer game with my neice and nephew, my other FBIL will stop by on his way back from the store with my nephew and next thing you know we are BSing and a BBQ has formed! I wouldnt want to miss that closeness. And I wouldnt want to miss my neices and nephews growing up.

My one brother moved about 2 hours from LI and it was the best thing for him but even he gets a little upset sometimes when he realizes the things he is missing by not being here.

the only way I can see us moving is if one of us got a job offer that we would be stupid to refuse. Moving off LI used to be a dream of mine, but now my priorities have totally changed!

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

We are moving upstate. About 2 hours up in Orange county. We are keeping our house here on LI and renting it out. Just incase we would like to come back in a few years. The reason were moving is we breed dogs and need bigger property. We have an acre here but thats not enough. We bought 19 acres up there. It will be saving us ALOT of money with our mortgage which is good cause now we can have a nice savings. My dh did the commute to work anyway and it will actually save him some time driving up there after work then coming out to LI. We were going to go down south but dh wouldnt have been making the same money down there and plus i didnt want to go to far from my family.

I feel the exact same way and hopefully we we will be moving in about 2-3 years. If I had it my way it would be 1-2 years.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

We are now living in NJ...and we think we are going to trade in my condo for a house in Rockland County. Although the prices aren't cheap there either...we could never afford LI even on our salaries. I've gotten my family used to driving to NJ...it's not too bad...it's not another planet (contrary to what LI'ers think). DH parents live in Florida....so I would consider going there also.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

I think about it too, but DH does not. I have a great teaching job here, and I know I would not make as much money somewhere else. However, it just seems that I will never be able to afford a house here, and we both make pretty good money. It doesnt seem fair. I also do not want to live in some state where I would be bored to tears. I love having the beach, the city all close by. So, where would I go?

I live in Binghamton it that far from Orange County?

My DH was from here and I was from LI when we realized we could buy 20 acres of land for only $18,000 we decided it wasn't worth living on LI. So we built a house at I guess a quarter or at least half of what it would cost on LI. So I am only 5 hour from my family and not in another state and still get cheaper living. The funny thing is my Mom came to visit for Christmas and now we are building an apartment on to the house because she is moving up here!!

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

We did not go very far, but we moved to NJ because we could not fathom the outrageous cost of living. It is not tons better in NJ, but we are getting a decent sized house with a yard in a nice neighborhood for a reasonable price.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

my fi and i made the mistake of looking at houses in NC when we were visiting his brother. now we are looking here and it is a bit depressing. we can't move anywhere for over a year because i will be finishing up a masters degree, but there is a chance that we will move. it all really depends on my fi job. i can work anywhere, i a speech teacher.

Re: Is anyone thinking of moving out of New York?

Mrs. TC-

Where in NJ do you live? My husband and I may relocate there for hi job, it would be Monmouth/Ocean County. I grew up on LI and he in NJ, but I really only know NJ right where he grew up in East Brunswick. Thanks!
