Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
When do teachers know if they are not getting tenure? If you are not getting tenure does that mean you are also fired? (Do teachers who are denied tenure come back to teach?)

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
This just happened to me. For the stupidist reason I am not being granted tenure as a TA and I had to submit my letter of resignation about two weeks ago, before the board meeting. If I did not submit that letter I would have been fired.

There is this HORRIBLE teacher in my FH's little brother's district and we think she has not been granted tenure yet, but we don't see the job posted the the district web site. We're hoping she gets the boot.

I'm sorry to hear that! If its any consolation, from what I know if the way thigs work in the school systems, it often doesn't make sense why some get tenure and others don't. Often it has a lot to do with who you know, unfortunately.

I was wondering what would prevent you from getting tenure? Does it go by your observations? What does it depend on??

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
Tenure is so subjective.....I have tenure at my school, but a teacher who started the same year I did, does not have tenure and a teacher that started a year later does. It totally doesn't make sense. I firmly beleive it depends on who you know. My department chair says that it really depends if you hold a Master's degree. Who knows!

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
In my district most people who survive three years get tenure. This is my tenure year, as far as I know it is based on observations as well as performance. If you are not going to get tenure in my district they usually ask you to resign in your first or second year. I should be appointed for tenure soon...HOPEFULLY!!!!!!!

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
The teachers in my district knew in like Feb or Jan if they weren't going to get tenure.. but I think most are aware in the beginning of the year that they really need to bust their a**es... the teachers that were granted tenure found out last week...

Well, I can tell you from what I am going through now, that it is not based on performance or observations at all. I have three years of excellent observation forms in my portfolio. I, and not to sound conceited, am an excellent teacher, and I am not being granted tenure because they looked at a piece of paper that said I had 16 absences my first and second year there. They never asked why I used so many days or anything. Well, I was out that time because I was in a car accident and I am still in thereapy to this day and it is three years later. It is definiteley who you know. All the teachers at my school are extremely pissed that this is happening to me. They all keep telling me what a wonderful teacher I am. I do so much for my school. I attend every extra curricular event, and I don't have to. I have been the only teacher to even attend some of these events. I always went above and beyond what my job title as Intervention Assistant detailed, yet all of that was overlooked. Well, the way I see it now, it is their loss, not mine, I will be an incredible asset to a new school next year.
P.S. We got a new principal this year, she came from the city schools, and a lot of people have suggested I am losing my job, because she has people from the city school she worked at that she wants to bring in. It's all about who you know!!!

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
the people who are getting tenure have been notified already in my school... and the teacher who will not be asked back have already been notified as well, i believe. i know at least one teacher in my department was let go, and one was granted tenure.....it's a scary year in my district because they're cutting the budget and cutting jobs as a result....

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
The tenure cermony for my district was this passed Thursday.
Tenure in our district is based on: Performance, Personality, and Absences. Our board is a real stickler about being absent. They do not want to see new teachers out a lot. I know that my first 3 years I took a total of 5 sick days in ALL 3 YEARS. Even now I barely take days off, but it is more about the fact of the lack of decent subs in my district (they are cheap when it comes to paying subs).
Usually they will let people know in advance but last year and the year before they fired 3 teachers in their tenure year, it was bad and not good for moral I must tell you. But then again this year they fired 2 teachers in the middle of the school year, which I have NEVER seen them do before. Even if the teacher was really bad they always waited out the year but not this year. We have a completely new administraction so that could have something to do with it.
Jaime I am sorry.

Re: Questions for Teachers: Do people know yet if they are not asked to come back next year?
In my district, all those that got tenure and those that have not were notified already. I know 3 teachers that are not returning next year. It seems my district has become very difficult in regard to tenure. In the past couple of years, the chairperson/director positions have changed a lot and they have a lot of say as to who gets tenure. There has always been an unspoken rule that absence during your first 3 years is a big mistake. I remember coming to school SO sick so I wouldn't use any of my sick days. Good luck to all of those seeking tenure.

I have been told that this is how it works in my district as well . . .
