How is this done? I'm having a really hard time finding a post office that will do it.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
They are all supposed to do it for you... They should not give you a hard time or charge you.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
I just did mine this morning. I did mine in NYC so I can't help you with locations on long Island but I thought that all post offices will do it. Anyway- as an FYI- the woman in the post office told me that even though they will hand cancel them there for me, the main post office on 34th street may make a mistake and run them though the machine again. She said it shouldn't happen but it happens on occasion. So unless you take it to the main post office (whatever that means), there really is no gaurentee. But it's still worth it I think! As for the cost- here, the first 50 are free and then it's $0.05 for each additional. It's not bad- I paid $4 for the entire batch!

Re: Hand cancelling invites
Can I ask what it is? I've seen it mentioned a bunch of times but I have no idea what it means.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
it's when the post offices uses a stamp (by hand) to process the letter- it's that circle with the date & place it was mailed from. usually, when you mail something, it goes through a machine and stamps the letter. But most people prefer to hand stamp their wedding invitations to avoid big machine marks on the envelopes. I got one from a friend that was not hand cancelled and it looked like a tire track on the envelope- not so nice when you spend hundreds of dollars for the invitations!

Ah-ha. Thanks! I'll have to keep this in mind when it comes to sending out invitations.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
Thanks all... I am doing it from Manhattan and I called about 4 post offices and some dont even know what I am talking about. I even stood on line at my local post office on Sat. morning for 1/2 hour only to be told they dont do it at that P.O. One of my friends had told me she went to the post office by my job and they gave her the stamper and she did it herself. When I called them they said they dont do that at all, but offered to do it for me when they had time! I dont know if I trust that they will send them out right away. I'm almost just tempted to throw them in the mailbox and forget about it.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
Hicksville does it--I recommend doing it because I got an invite that wasn't hand cancelled and it looked like it was run over by a truck!

Re: Hand cancelling invites
White-wolf- I don't know where you live but I just did mine this morning from the post office on 78th and York Avenue. They do it. They told me that they will have someone in the back do it by hand and send them out today.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
Thanks Mindy...I am in Washington Heights 168th & Broadway...I called the p.o. here and they said they would do it. I got the manager's name and she said she would tell the window clerk to make sure they are hand-cancelled. I just have to find out if they do it today.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
They hand cancelled mine in Merrick, they were very nice about it. I would recommend going when they open in the morning when there isn't a big crowd at the post office. This is what I did. The invitations looked untouched when they arrived.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
I hand cancelled my STDs at a post office in the Bethpage area and I had 70 of them and they didn't give a problem with doing it or charge me anything.

Re: Hand cancelling invites
Thanks all for your suggestions. I took them to the post office near my job and they were going to do them and get them the same day. I gave her 97. I acutally had called the post office on 34th and 8th and they did say they charge 5 cents after the first 50. I made sure to ask when I bought them in and the clerk smiled and said not to worry about that. Now I feel embarrassed to go back with the rest of them that I havent even finished yet! Maybe I will go to another post office and drop them off.
