Those of you who commute from LI to New Jersey... or those who live in NJ!
If you commute: Where do you commute from and where do you commute to? How long does it take? What form of transportation do you use? Those who live in NJ: WHere do you live? What are some nice and affordable areas of NJ, especially near Clark, Edison, or Rahway?
Thanks so much

hoboken is not 'affordable' but lots of fun!when i was working in manhattan my commute via PATH, bus or ferry was anywhere from 20-40 minutes door to door (depending on where i worked and where i was living in hoboken)...
now i drive to work in jersey. a 15-20 minute drive no traffic turns into a 30-45 minute drive in rush hour

I commute from Howard Beach to midtown Manhattan. It takes me about an hour each way.

You cannot commute from LI to Edison...it would take you 3 hours driving each way...if you're lucky. I have a friend that lives in Edison...and I used to live in Keasbey (right near Woodbridge). Also, I hear that Sayerville is nice. I live in Northern NJ (Bergen County) and the towns you listed are all in Middlesex County...a little further south.

I live in Bergen County, but when I was single I lived In Cranford..right next to Clark!! There are a ton of very affordable places nearby! If you are in Edison, Edison itself is affordable as well as East Brunswick ( also lived there too). So many places!!! Come to NJ!!! Its great here!

Like luvsun said, Middlsex counties are a little south, but people do commute. When I lived in Cranford, it is right next to Clark, there wasa nice train station and lots of commuters into the city. Here in Bergen county, I can take a train to Hoboken and then into the city from there. Hope this is helpful!

Thanks Alicia. That was actually very helpful. If you can tell I am in the process of getting a new job, and unfortunatly for me there are not many jobs available for me on LI, most are in NJ. I still haven't decided what to do yet but I wanted to get more info so I could tell my FH. Say we moved to Cranford, how long would that take to drive to Clark and how long would it tak to get to Manhattan? I don't know ANYTHING about NJ so if we decided to move there, which is a very slim chance, then I am going to need more help!

If you moved to Cranford, you could be to Clark in less than 15 minutes. There are back roads you would learn to get ya there in five. Its literally right next door!!! Are you looking athe Loreal lancome place? If you wanted to take a train into the city..you would take the train from cranford to either newark and switch to Manhatten, or you would take it into Hoboken and then switch. There are so many commuters in Cranford. Cranford is agreat wonderful town! And so many affordable places, there is Union which would take ya 20 minutes or less to Clark. Rochelle Park is another town near clark, its not as nice as Cranford, parts of it arent nice, but parts of it are..and affordabe. You have lots of options!!! If I can help ya with anything let me know!!!

Clark itself is a great town!!! I hada friend who lived there!! Definately check out the area. It is very nice!!Westfield is also next door but not affordable for us just yet..maybe someday! Cranford is probably a notch down from Westfield, not as expensive, but very very nice. Has a duck pond, a canoe club, a nice cute downtown, nice people, good schools, no crime, cute cops
Oh Gosh..I forgot about Garwood, Garwood is a cute town..its right in between Westfield and Cranford. I know thats affordable also! i miss Cranford..thats where I lived before I moved in with DH.

Re: Those of you who commute from LI to New Jersey... or those who live in NJ!
I live in NJ now and commute to NYC. I live in Union and my train gets me to NYC in about 30 minutes and it's direct. Another nice area in the Clark, Cranford area is Westfield- it is the cutest town. Also, Springfield is nice- alot of nice townhouses. We are looking to buy a house in Springfield. DH grew up in Edison- some parts are nice, some aren;t. They have an extremely overcrowded train station that gets you to NYC in about 35-40 minutes. FM with anymore information but I live very close to the area;s you're considering.

Not commuting related...But I have two guy friends who live on the island (one in Levittown and one in Bayshore) and their girlfriends live in New Jersey (Manalapan and Chatham, respectively--both fairly exclusive areas, from what I understand..)As far as I know, they've always driven back and forth to each other and it takes at least two hours...

Chatham is a great area, but not really affordable unless you can buya million dollar home, or rent a very expensive apt. I used to work in Chatham and Madison, my sister still works there.VERY nice, but about a 40 minute rideto Clark.Welcome New Vendors
