We were quoted $129 for the Marriot in Melville where we blocked off rooms. The best western wanted $119, executive suites $109 & Inn at Fox Hollow $199 - FM if you need any more info on those places - they're all by/in Woodbury

for a chain hotel that is about the lowest you are going to get - if you feel it is too much you have to go with small privately owned hotels and bed and breakfasts they tend to negotiate easier i found some that would go as low as 75.00

Welcome to my world...the southampton inn is charging $169 per room, and that's a special off-season, group rate! People from NY understand, but I'm getting soooooo much slack from the out-of-towners...

For Long Island, not I don't think it's too much. But, it is a lot of money and I felt bad for our relatives from out of town paying these rates when they would be getting high end luxurious rooms for the same price where they live.

That is my issue. Everyone else coming in is expecting to pay alot less for their rooms then what I will end up telling them. I feel so bad. And most of them are still in that starving college student phase, like 20-25.

I completely understand!!!

We got $129 at our hotel, but that's because FH is good friends with one of the managers and she took REALLY good care of us.

I STILL had to argue with my mom over it - she insisted on finding another hotel for less - what did we end up with?

The Econolodge in Islandia. A Full 30 minutes east of CB.

Oh well, it's available.

when we went looking, all the hotels price quoted us at the same amount. we booked with the one that would offer us the most for the money. the holiday inn express in hauppauge is giving us a shuttle to and from the reception and breakfast the next day for all guests

Tara-they charged me the same price (I am guessing it went up from $109 around the time we booked from $99 when Julie's sister booked) and we are getting a shuttle. They should provide that automatically. They have vans that go anyhow and request if you can have one to go to your catering hall. Did they give you a reason why they couldn't? If you take someone (like my mom) who you know is a good negotiator, they may even be able to get you more. My mom negotiated a free suite for us if we book 10 rooms. She mentioned something like since it wasn't a busy time of year and it was on a Sunday, it wouldn't be a time where they would be all booked. Maybe that could work with the Friday too.

I think that is reasonable. But, then again, I charge $160 - $185 per night in October, at the hotel I manage. All weekends in October are still busy for me, especially with weddings. I have 3 every weekend but one.

I am less likely to give a discount if you are blocking a group. I would rather sell one room at a discount then a whole bunch. The amount of discount adds up when you multiply it by all those rooms. December weekends, would be another story!

Does that make sense?

This is going to sound dumb, but how do you bargain down on hotel rooms? I'm not very good at this stuff to begin with, but I don't even know what I would say.

We went back and forth on this, and finally just bit the bullet and booked at Danford's which is $189 over Labor Day weekend. Some of these places book up no matter what over the summer, so they won't even negotiate. We shopped around and most of the rates we saw (Wyndam, Marriott) were around $139.
