Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
I am about to tackle a project that includes making place cards, menus, and table #'s for my engagement party. My ? is this: Say I buy pretty paper from a paper store...let's say a 5 X 7 sized card stock to make menus on the computer...how do I format this all....All I really have to work with is MS Word...should I buy another kind of software?
Also, any ideas as to how to make a monogram...I have been fooling around on MS Word, but nothing is really working for me:)
Does any one have any templates that I can work off of??
TIA you guys are the best:)

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
I've been working on programs, place cards and table numbers - all in MS Word without a problem. I find that the text boxes are very helpful. The only thing is you'll need to invest in a paper cutter.

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
So basically you are saying that I should buy the regular sized paper and then cut them?I was thinking maybe there was a way to format the printer to the size of the paper you have....
Thanks for the text box suggestion...that is how I have been trying to create a monogram, but no luck...
Maybe I just suck with computers:):)

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
Monograms work best in programs like illustrator or quark, because you have to move things around and Word doesn't like/wasn't made for that. that being said, if you put each item of the monogram into a picture box, you should be able to come up with something.I cut a regular piece of paper longways. it was just easier. Of course you can format the printer and Word to print on any size paper you want, but it might be tricky.

Yes I figured Word wasn't the best choice of software with this kind of stuff! I will look into the others...uprint is a great website, thanks Suven!!!!

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
I usually cut my paper to the size that i need, then I change my paper size in MS word to the dementions of the paper. I find that sometimes, MS Word doesnt view each half of the paper as the same size and I sometimes have problems printing 2 exact copies of something if i set it up in word.Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
YOu can use word for most of those projects. If you buy 5x7 paper (or any other size for that matter) you just need to set up the document to be that size. Go to File, Page setup, paper and you can custom size the document. dafont.com is a great resource for finding new fonts and you could probably make a monogram using text boxes. Just make the center one a larger size than the smaller ones. I hope this helps!

Michael's Art and Crafts might have something that you are looking for without having to do any cutting of paper. I checked it out this weekend and they had some good things.

Re: Making your own Place Cards, Menus, and other paper things
I made programs, menus, thanks you notes for my cd cases, and note cards for welcome bags. For everything but the programs ( bought the kit from staples), I printed on vellum paper (from staples). I also printed our monogram on lavendar card stock and am attaching the two pieces of paper with lavendar ribbon.I am also doing place cards - once I finalize my seating.
BTW - I bought a papercutter from Staples to help with all of the assembling. It was worth it!
Here are the templates I created myself. I don't have a picture of them yet. I will take pics with my digital camera and post if you are interested in seeing what they look like.

For those of you who would like me to e-mail the templates to you, please provide me with an alternate e-mail address as I can not send word attachments through to you via your LIWeddings e-mail address.send me a FM with your personal e-mail address and I would be happy to share - but probably tomorrow as I am racing out of the office and have plans tonight.

NSGraham is correct about the other programs. But they are VERY pricey graphic artist programs. Maybe you know someone who might have access to such programs at their job?
You can get away using Photoshop also.
I'm not great with graphic arts, but I'm not bad either. If you want to FM me what you want, I can try and do it in Photoshop for you. I just can't make promises that you'll love it.
