Family and Weddings

Does anyone have people in their family who follow that, I guess 'belief,' for lack of a better word, that weddings should occur in age order?

Here's what I mean...a friend has two cousins older that her and the belief is that they are the 'next' to get married. She got engaged a while back then a few months later one cousin get engaged - out of no where and set her wedding date earlier than my friend's. She went to the engagement party and when saying hello to her cousin the cousin says 'Ha, I beat you!' My friend just laughted and walked away. Now the other cousin just got engaged and all bets are on her wedding also before my friends - probably only a month or two before! What do you all think of that?

Re: Family and Weddings

um, I've never actually heard of that. I guess that's how it usually goes, unless cousins are really close in age. I'll be married before my brother though, and he's almost 3 years older than me. Well, unless he manages to meet, propose to, and marry a girl within the next 12 months.

Just sounds like some silly competition.

Best of luck to your friend!

Re: Family and Weddings

I don't have anyone in my family like that...at least none who I know of. That's kinda crazy...really creates a lot of unnecessary pressure, and it sounds rather immature. Who cares who gets married first, it's not a race! Let's just hope they all stay married.

Re: Family and Weddings

That's what I said - never heard of that before. I thought people got married when it was right - not on a time schedule. She's not so worried that people will have a better wedding - just hurt that people want to compete and take a way a little from her. I told her the next time they say something to just turn around and tell them that of course the best is always saved for last! But she's too nice to say that to anyone.

Re: Family and Weddings

oh - she should def say that! That would really get them..

It's almost like saying you have to get married in the order you got engaged. When it's right, and the timing is right - that's when you should get married. As my friend said, there's never a perfect time to get married, just have to do it when you want and you feel the timing is right.

But yeah, your friend should so say that - Save the best for last, i like it.

Re: Family and Weddings

Im going through that. I have a cousin that already had been engaged for about 2 years before I even got engaged. She didn't have a set date or anything. Once I got engaged, she rushed to planned everything. First she was going to get married a month after me. Now she's getting married next month. She also sends others to try to figure out what I'm doing and stuff. Thats why I keep everything hush-hush.

Re: Family and Weddings

Well I had that experience myself. Generally, I think people think because you are older you are getting married next. Its strange! I have been with FI for such a long time, since HS. His older bro started seeing a girl and after a year they were engaged. Recently his older bro. got married. When he got engaged everyone started telling me that I was next. I hated that comment because I was not waiting for his bro to get married, to get engaged. I thought it was crazy. However, when I told my FI that I got upset when people tell me Im next, like I am standing on a line, he said, you are next, i wouldnt get married before my older brother. I WAS SO SHOCKED. Some people just think that way!

Re: Family and Weddings

I never heard of that - although I was bummed five years ago when my younger brother got married but I didn't run out and get married first!
